October is the most beautiful month of the year in New Orleans and we celebrate Art for Art's Sake October 5th.

This year we are hosting Eddy Stevens from Belgium.

Sitting down to write our monthly newsletter, I googled special days in October and found more that 300 National ...fill in the blank... days. They run from International Day of Non Violence on October 2nd,

to International Girl Day on the 11th, emphasizing the difficulties of gender inequality that girls face in today’s society.

Indigenous Peoples Day is on the 14th,

and World Humanitarian Action Day is the 19th.

I like the sound of this... Fine Art Appreciation Day on the 25th.

The entire month recognizes Breast Cancer Awareness,

Emotional Wellness and World Bullying Prevention.

Keep your awareness up!

Being a city of festivals, we celebrate everything. One celebration stands out that is worth bringing to your attention,

Treme fest, Saturday, October 26th. This festival has music, food, art and activities honoring Tremé history and culture. Tremé, a historic community just outside the French Quarter, is the oldest African American neighborhood in America. In the 18th and early 19th centuries, free persons of color and eventually those African slaves who obtained, bought or bargained for their freedom were able to acquire and own property in Tremé. The ability to purchase and own real property was remarkable and only in New Orleans did this occur with any regularity and consistency. Today, the neighborhood is viewed by many as ground zero for New Orleans culture, the civil rights movement and home to several museums dedicated

to African American life, art and history.

Congo Square, located in Louis Armstrong Park is an open space where the enslaved and free people of color gathered throughout the 19th century for meetings, open markets, African dance and drumming celebrations. Drumming, dancing and other ritual still happens there. Next time you visit, make sure to check out Treme....

Happy Fall! She's here with all the beauty she brings...
