March 17-18, 2023

25 Adar 5783

Shalom AKSE Congregants and Friends of AKSE:

The (double) Torah portion this Shabbat is Vayakhel-Pekudei. It is also Shabbat Hachodesh, the last of four special Shabbatot before Pesach. We hope to welcome you at our in-person Shabbat services. Kabbalat Shabbat services on Friday start at 6 p.m. Shabbat morning services are at 9 a.m. Saturday. Shabbat afternoon services (Mincha/Ma'ariv) are at 6:50 p.m. Saturday this week. Cantor Redfern is officiating at Shabbat services.

The Torah Talk this Shabbat is being given by Martin Cohn (yours truly). My topic is "Kohanim of Ancient Times."

This Shabbat's printed newsletter, which will be available at services, may also be viewed online here. You will find candle lighting, service and Havdalah times, service leaders, Torah and Haftorah readings, condolences and this week's Yahrzeits there.

Please note that Immanuel Church is holding an all-day event this Saturday. 15-20 parking spaces will be reserved for our use in front of our building. If you arrive late, it is possible there will not be any parking spaces remaining. Alternative parking is available on Greenhill Avenue northbound between 11th and 7th streets. More details about overflow parking are available here.

Rosh Chodesh Nisan is this Thursday. So we will welcome the new month at our usual 9 a.m. Shacharit service on Thursday, of course including Hallel.

Shabbat Shalom!

Martin

Incredible stories are told on its shores—from King Solomon to Jonah and the whale to even Ramses II and Napoleon, all left their footprints. Hear how Jaffa was the port of aliyah and gateway to the land of Israel. We will discover its secrets and uncover its charm on our virtual hour tour.

IN-PERSON SHACHARIT SERVICE

We are holding Shacharit services with Torah reading on Thursday mornings, in our building at 2412 Pennsylvania Ave. Please plan to join us.

This Thursday is Rosh Chodesh Nisan. So we will welcome the new month, including Hallel, at the in-person Shacharit service.

The AKSE Education Committee is continuing a new program on Shabbat mornings. Torah Talks are taking the place of sermons or Divrei Torah. These talks are being led by members of the AKSE community, as well as by members of the wider Jewish community.

A variety of formats are available to those who volunteer to lead Torah Talks: traditional Divrei Torah, short discussions of ethical or historical questions raised by the text, reflections on seasonal holidays and traditions, and talks that connect with the speakers’ personal interests and expertise in Jewish culture. Our goal is to bring variety, innovation, and creativity to Shabbat learning. Look for announcements of the speakers and topics for upcoming Torah Talks in future Shofars and email newsletters.

Read more about the Torah Talk program in this article published in the March issue of Jewish Living Delaware.

If you have wisdom to share, a favorite parsha to delve into, or a special interest to showcase, please get in touch with Lisa Elliott ([email protected]) or Harriet Ainbinder ([email protected]) to schedule your Torah Talk.
