ALADS Supporting Deputy Luke Liu
Tuesday, December 11, 2018 - ALADS is committed to supporting our members in many ways – whether related to family, health, wellness, recreation or legal matters. As a union that represents over 7,800 Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies, it is a fundamental part of our role to lend our support to deputies in need whenever possible and appropriate.

This morning, our membership demonstrated a show of support for Deputy Luke Liu based on the information that is available to us about the scene he encountered on February 24, 2016.

Our own experiences in these dangerous and high-risk scenarios affirm our belief that a deputy, or any sworn peace officer, has the right to use force to protect themselves and members of the public. Based on what we know, Deputy Liu’s in-the-moment actions were justifiable given his interaction with a suspect who, while under the influence of methamphetamine and driving a stolen car, disobeyed lawful orders and struck Deputy Liu while speeding away. Following the shooting, Deputy Liu immediately administered CPR to the suspect.

Deputy Liu has been honorably serving as a deputy for 11 years and has had no prior disciplinary issues. He continued working as a deputy for almost three years after this incident, and has received commendations including a life-saving award.
