Farewell Message from
ALASBO President,
Jimmy Love
Good Day, ALASBO!

I recently returned from the 2021 ASBO International Annual Conference and Expo in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. It was an exciting time to, once again, be in person and talking with old friends and colleagues. I also took the opportunity to meet some new people. We shared stories and exchanged ideas and thoughts on where we have been, what we are doing, and what we are going to do. I felt reenergized by the event and extremely thankful for ALASBO sending me.

I know it is challenging, especially recently, but if you get the opportunity to attend an ASBO conference PLEASE take advantage of it.  I am so thankful for all of the opportunities I have had by attending these.  It has certainly made me a better employee and person.

If you cannot attend the ASBO conference then take a smaller step and register for the ALASBO Annual Conference.  My theme for this year is “Together Towards Tomorrow” and it is scheduled for December 2, 3 and 6 – 8, 2021.  Unfortunately, due to the high number of COVID-19 cases, the board has decided to go virtual.  This is not something any of us wanted to do, but ALASBO’s mission is to provide professional development opportunities to its members.  With the number of travel restrictions across our great state, it only made sense to go virtual.  I hope that you are able to register for this year’s conference and hopefully, this time next year we will be shaking hands and saying hello in person.
ALASBO Increases Professional Development Opportunities for Members
by Jennifer Schmitz, Education Director, ALASBO

It has always been a goal of the ALASBO Board of Directors to offer as many opportunities to its members to work together, to attend trainings, and to generally support everyone they can in any way possible. Over the years, the need for specific and timely professional development has often come up. The challenge is that the roles that ALASBO members fill across the state are incredibly varied.  Over the past couple of years, in an effort to address members’ needs for training and support, ALASBO developed a PD committee and a variety of sub committees, applied for a PD grant from DEED, and hired me, Jennifer Schmitz, as the Educational Director, to aid in moving this effort forward.

The goal of the ALASBO PD committee is to develop training opportunities for ALASBO membership. This committee is made up of the following members: Andy Ratliff, Anchorage SD, Karen Morrison, Petersburg SD, Jimmy Love, President, Kenai Peninsula Borough SD, Yodean Armour, Klawock City SD, Jenny Myhand, while at Lake & Peninsula SD, Melody Douglas, ALASBO, and Darcy Carter, ALASBO. Under the leadership of this committee, sub-committees in the areas of Human Resources, Instructional Technology, Facilities and Maintenance, and Student Nutrition were formed.

Executive Director's Message- Darcy Carter

As we prepare for another ALASBO Annual Conference, I am becoming more and more excited about our line-up of great presenters and topics.

Pictured to the left are our keynotes speakers. Clint Campion, Attorney, will be speaking about legal aspects of school business and is not only informative, but also entertaining. Holly Brooks, OLY, LPC, PMH-C will be giving an engaging and interactive presentation that is sure to leave everyone with take-aways to improve their lives, both personal and work.

The round tables, discussion groups and sectionals are packed with dynamic speakers and relevant topics that will help you to do your very best work to help ensure a quality education for Alaska's students.

While many are disappointed that the conference is virtual, let's take a look at the bright side. By being virtual, more of our members will be able to attend and receive this important professional learning. All the keynotes and sectionals will be recorded, so you may listen to anything you missed.

I look forward to seeing you on Zoom for this conference. If you have not registered yet, here is the link: registration link

Three Colin Powell Rules That I Live and Lead By
by Dr. Jeffrey McCausland, Diamond6 Leadership
printed with permission

Last week we lost a distinguished American leader, trailblazer, and military officer.

I greatly admired Colin Powell for not only his incredible leadership...

I admired him, and still do, for his honesty, integrity, and courage to do what he felt was right. Even when it meant admitting he had been wrong or he chose to go against popular opinion.

This is how I will remember him. Click here to read the rest of this article.

Distribution / Supply Chain / Warehousing by Dale Clark, Division Director, NAPA Integrated Business Solutions

Warehousing is an important piece of a supply chain. While it’s not the sexiest of subjects, warehousing and inventory storage affect everything from sourcing raw materials and, efficiently managing inventory, to getting orders delivered to clients like school districts on time.

Though the principles of warehousing have not changed much over the years, warehousing solutions have evolved a lot. With new technologies, urbanization, and the ever-growing world of online shopping, warehousing has never been a hotter topic, such as on-demand warehousing.

What is Centralized On-Demand Warehousing?
Warehousing is the process of storing physical goods before they are sold or further distributed in a dedicated warehouse or storage facility. Warehouses safely and securely store products in an organized way to track where items are located, when they arrived, how long they have been there, and the quantity on hand.

Centralized Warehouses are a common theme today for large enterprises.  Distribution Centers see products turn quickly where Warehouses are more available to house products for periods of time.  Centralized On-Demand Warehousing can be critical in a supply chain where distribution centers are not geographically nearby.   Read the rest of this article here.
Here we go…together!
by Dr. Lisa Parady, Executive Director, ACSA

As the days grow shorter and darker, we recognize that 2021 is coming to a close. So as we prepare to greet 2022, I encourage you to start reviewing education related legislation that could come up in the next legislative session, beginning January 18, 2022.

As school business officials, your voice and expertise are critical. You know better than most the need for long-term solutions in our districts and how flat funding in relation to inflation makes it hard for schools to pay for essential maintenance. School business offices haven't been exempt from the turnover crisis we are seeing with teachers and administrators in Alaska and nationally. During this upcoming session, we expect to see legislation that will try to remedy the issue and other pressing education issues. Having a well-rounded voice from education leaders is crucial as these bills take form through the process. I appreciate the opportunity to advocate to policymakers on your behalf and with you – so let’s get ready to share our collective voices beginning in January.

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the ACSA Legislative Fly-In! This is the opportunity for all ACSA members, affiliate organizations to come together in Juneau to advocate for public education. Unity! Right now we are planning to meet in person – please join us March 6 – 9, 2022, Juneau! Details to follow soon!

Here are some of the bills slated for the forthcoming session, where your voice will be critical in advocating for Alaska’s schools. READ THE REST OF LISA's ARTICLE HERE.
