(Herndon, Virginia) - The Virginia Faith & Freedom Coalition announced today that pastors and faith leaders from across Northern Virginia have signed a letter asking the Commonwealth's Legislators to "consider the moral, social and economic impact of the proposal and reject the idea of allowing a casino to be built in Tysons."
The sixteen religious leaders and the Virginia Faith & Freedom Coalition Board, outlined the severe negative impact on our local communities, especially considering its proximity to schools, houses, and the burdens it would place on families in Northern Virginia.
The group referenced a report by The Council of Casinos, an organization founded to educate the public on the negative effects of casino gambling. The report outlined how casinos target the poor and prey upon patrons enslaved by the the unjust compulsion of addictions.
This report also found that the presence of a casino reduces voluntarism, family stability, and other forms of social capital within 15 miles of a community where the gambling facility is located. The letter goes on to cite studies by Gamblers Anonymous and the American Psychiatric Association.
VAFFC Board Member, Ron Wright, referenced the documented problems with human trafficking in Northern Virginia and how a casino and hotel in Tysons would substantially increase this problem. "Just a few months ago, a Homeland Security memo was sent out (HERE) alerting police officials in Virginia about how the Venezuelan gang, TDA was infiltrating the DC and Northern Virginia region. TDA is known for its human trafficking. A casino in Tysons would be like placing a magnet for prostitution and sex trafficking there for TDA."
The pastors and faith leaders concluded their letter to the General Assembly Members with "We trust you will make the right decision for the people of Virginia, especially the families in Northern Virginia who will bear the brunt of this [casino] Project."
The Virginia Faith & Freedom Coalition is a 501(c)4 non-profit organization affiliated with the national Faith & Freedom Coalition, a national grassroots movement of over 2 million conservatives and people of faith.
