ALERT! Vaccine for Children Ages Five to 11 Approved
Yolo County Parents Able to Vaccinate Children at Risk
On November 3, 2021, the Western States Scientific Safety Review Workgroup (WSSSRWG) unanimously concluded that the Pfizer- vaccine is safe and effective for youth ages five to 11, following the Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the FDA and the recommendation of the CDC. Pfizer pediatric doses are now available in Yolo County at pharmacies, healthcare providers, community clinics, and school clinics.
Parents can find COVID-19 and flu vaccination locations at myturn.ca.gov. The Yolo County Health and Human Services Agency is working with community clinics, independent pediatricians, and school districts to offer the vaccine across the county. School clinics open to the public kick off at Pioneer High School in Woodland on November 5, 2021, from 3 pm to 6 pm, with pediatric Pfizer doses and all adult vaccines. Other school clinics already scheduled include Davis, Esparto, West Sacramento, Winters and more in Woodland.
The Pfizer-BioNTech trials used and FDA’s EUA authorized lower doses of the vaccine for children ages five to 11 compared to teens and adults. The WSSSRWG reviewed safety data for the vaccine, noting the absence of any severe adverse events among vaccine recipients in the clinical trial. Reactions were mild and similar to those seen in adolescents and adults and with other vaccines routinely recommended for children and were less common at ages five to 11 years than at 16-25 years.
“Vaccines historically helped us overcome dangerous communicable diseases, and fortunately, the decades of research on mRNA led to COVID-19 vaccines, including the Pfizer vaccine,” said Yolo County Health Dr. Aimee Sisson. “With the approval of pediatric doses of the Pfizer vaccine, I strongly recommend that parents vaccinate their children to protect them against COVID-19. The more people who are fully vaccinated, the closer we are to ending the pandemic.”
