 Adam, URGENT: Democrats in the Michigan House have a vote planned for TODAY on House Bill 4474, which would make it a FELONY in Michigan to make speech that is perceived by the recipient as having caused "severe mental anguish" and perceived by the recipient as being motivated by hatred for one's race, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, or other protected classes. Under the emotional pretext of "stopping hate crimes," this bill would actually criminalize your free speech – and allow extremist activists and government officials to put concerned citizens behind bars simply for expressing their political views. It's not hard to imagine how this will be abused, considering that the Biden Justice Department is targeting concerned parents protesting radical transgender indoctrination in schools. This bill will turn the First Amendment on its head and give left-wing activists the ability to weaponize the criminal justice system against citizens whose opinions they disagree with. This will mean that radical teachers indoctrinating students in their classrooms and school board officials will be able to DESTROY THE LIVES of people who disagree with their policies by simply claiming the member of the public caused them "mental anguish." This isn't a "hate crime" law — it's a thought crime law that would make it a crime to say or do ANYTHING that is perceived by the supposed victim as having been motivated by hatred and having caused them stress. This bill is getting a vote THIS AFTERNOON on the House Floor, and if passed will go to the Senate, so take just a few seconds to contact your lawmakers RIGHT NOW. This is an extreme attack on your First Amendment rights. It would impermissibly chill public speech. It allows you to be criminally charged with a felony by the mere accusation that your words – in the mind of the supposed victim – were motivated by hatred and caused them distress. This is another extremist attempt to criminalize peaceful protest and citizen activism, and empower activist to weaponize the criminal justice system against political opponents.
