Staying Connected July 2025

In June and July, brief "Staying Connected" emails replace the monthly ALLways newsletter. The full newsletter will be back in August and will contain detailed information on how to register for the fall 2025 semester.

Due to construction, the ALL office is closed for the summer. You can still reach us by phone and email.

A Letter From The Past President

If the above title surprised you, know it surprises me also. Allow me to explain what happened.

May 19th, the evening of our annual meeting, found my wife Carol and me at the emergency room at Falmouth Hospital.

A CAT scan revealed the reason for persistent abdominal pain that had been plaguing me since March. I have stage 3 pancreatic cancer. That is a lot better than stage 4, and I have already started the first of eight rounds of chemotherapy at Massachusettes General Hospital, to be followed in September by daily doses of targeted x-rays (radiation therapy).

I have a great team of doctors who are responding very quickly to this fast-growing, very serious cancer. I am optimistic that with their help, my tumor can be shrunk small enough that it can be surgically removed.

I had planned to stay on another year as president of ALL, after which I would step down to let our delightful and most capable vice president Roger Shoemaker take over. Those plans are now accelerated.

When you next read Allways, our new president Roger will be at the top. I am the new Past-President, replacing Dianne Tattersall. Finally, Brian Haendiges, who is relatively new to ALL and brand new to our board, has graciously agreed to be our new Vice President.

I think you will find both of these men to be intelligent, accomplished, compassionate and focused on making ALL even better. The rest of our fantastic leadership remains unchanged.

I had been looking forward to coordinating a class on AI, and enjoying fall semester, but those plans are on hold until I can get this cancer under control. But know ALL remains my passion, and that I intend to return, better than ever. Enjoy the summer, and please take advantage of all that ALL offers. Life can turn on a dime. Cherish each day. Love each other.

That’s all for now; enjoy the read!
