Healthy And Fun Summer Living Tips

For Cape Cod

ALL coordinator Jane Ward and her husband Steve Waller, M.D. are physicians and year-round residents in Centerville. They are avid conservationists and gardeners. They are also advocates of fun ways to "live healthy."

This summer, Jane has agreed to share some of her insights on that topic with the ALL community.

Grow food and enjoy yourself in your own backyard!

Gardening offers full-body exercise (building strength & flexibility), improves vitamin D levels and mental health.

Gardening supports not just your plate—but your heart, mind, mood, and muscles? According to the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM), growing your own food:

  • Encourages outdoor physical activity
  • Reduces stress and improves sleep
  • Promotes whole food, plant-based eating-key to disease prevention and health promotion

Even better: garden with friends!

You can trade gardening time and share tips for health and fun!

Just start somewhere!

You don’t have to grow it all—just start somewhere. A single pot of herbs or a patch of greens can jumpstart a healthier lifestyle. Cape Cod’s soil, often sandy and acidic due to oak and pine, presents challenges—but many edibles thrive here.

Use raised beds, containers, or trellises to make the most of small spaces. Enrich your soil with compost or potting mix—and for best results, get it tested by the Cape Cod Cooperative Extension:  👉 Soil Testing Info

Try These Easy Nutrient Edibles in your Garden:

  • Leafy greens: Kale, arugula, Swiss chard—fast-growing, cut-and-come-again. Perennial sea kale is hardy and moth-resistant.

  • Cherry tomatoes: Sweet, child-friendly, and great for containers or climbing vines (indeterminate types).

  • Snap peas, cucumbers, pole beans: Vertical growers that are rich in fiber.

  • Herbs: Parsley, basil, thyme, mint, oregano, rosemary—flavorful, low-maintenance, and rabbit-resistant. (Contain mint—it spreads fast!) Plant near your kitchen for easy snipping.

  • Strawberries & blueberries: Grow well in pots, attract pollinators, but may need bird netting.

Local Resources:

  • Master Gardeners’ Demo Garden at the Cape Cod Fairgrounds
  • C.L. Fornari, “The Plant Lady” (Hyannis Country Garden, WCAI, Sand & Soil)
  • Local nurseries – Ask questions! Friendly staff are eager to help!

Thank You To The Hospitality Committee For The First Annual End-Of-Year Luncheon

ALL's first Annual End-of-Year Luncheon was a great success!

The event, planned by the Hospitality Committee, was held May 19th at 11:30 a.m. in the Great Hall of the Wilkens Science and Technlogy Building. More than 70 ALL members attended.

A full sandwich and salad buffet was available for attendees to enjoy as they celebrated the end of classes and visited with old and new ALL friends. We look forward to this becoming a regular end-of-year time to get together for the ALL community.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute

ALL Walking Tour - May 1, 2025

On May 1st, a group of 20 ALL members registered to attend a walking tour of the Quissett Campus of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.

The tour was organized by ALL Board member Pat McKean. It was hosted by Victoria Smith and Jim Flynn of WHOI.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is the world’s largest independent organization dedicated exclusively to ocean research, engineering and education, and it’s located right here on Cape Cod! It is a world-class institution we should all be familiar with.

WHOI boasts significant contributions to the global understanding of the ocean and exploration of the deep sea. Notable achievements include discovery of hydrothermal vent communities, exploration of the HMS Titanic, and creation of deep sea exploration with the submersible ALVIN and revolutionary underwater robotic technology.

The tour included an introduction to the WHOI campus and meeting several of the research scientists. This included viewing a slide showing proof of the asteroid that hit the earth and caused the extinction of the dinosaurs. This extinction allowed the fish to rule the oceans again.

Several anonymous comments from ALL members who were on the tour follow:

"Thanks for an enlightening day. Great to see those young spirits so alive with adventure and future research."

"I really enjoyed my visit to WHOI today!"

Please watch your emails for information on a second opportunity to register for a WHOI tour in the fall.

Photography Class Gallery

This in-person photography class met every Wednesday in ALL's classroom for six weeks. There were two sections of consecutive groups. It seems that what frequently happens when we get older is that we simply stop doing some of the things that used to make us happy. For our group, that thing was photography.

Most everybody has lots of good photographs taken years ago, often in far-away places. So now, we're studying how to improve some of the photographs we already have, how to take even better ones, and how to use some of the new digital apps to totally re-imagine what we can do with photography. What follows is the result of their collective work.
