The Arizona Forensic Science Advisory Committee is pleased to announce the next class of the Arizona Advanced Forensic Science Academy. This interactive and innovative seminar allows prosecutors and defense attorneys to take an in-depth and detailed look into key areas of forensic science including DNA, latent prints, firearms and digital evidence. In general, the topics are covered using in-depth discussions, guest speakers, and examinations of scientific evidence from various adjudicated cases. Attendee participation is critical to the successful completion of the Academy. Some reading prior to classes may be required as the presentation will assume a basic level of understanding of each topic.
The seminar will meet every Friday, beginning March 24, 2023, for a total of 8 weeks, from 1:00 – 4:15 p.m. at the at the Arizona Supreme Court/State Courts Building at 1501 W Washington St. There will be no class on April 7th. Light refreshments will be provided. Upon acceptance to the Academy, the participant will receive all details for webinar participation.
Topics will include:
- DNA analysis including the following advanced topics: DNA Mixture Interpretation, Probabilistic Genotyping Genetic Genealogy, Rapid DNA & Familial DNA testing
- Firearms topics include the following advanced topics: Crime Gun Intelligence Center approach & 3-D Topography Analysis
- Latent Print Comparative Analysis
- Digital Evidence and Cell Tower Data
- Guest speakers from industry leaders in research and development, practitioners, and legal experts
- Ethical considerations for presentation of forensic science expert testimony
The cost for the course is $300.00 and includes all course materials. The seminar may qualify for up to 24 hours of CLE credit including one hour of ethics.
All interested attorneys are invited to apply, but preference will be given to those who have been practicing for more than 3 years, and who have conducted at least ten felony jury trials which have included expert witness testimony in DNA, firearms, and/or latent prints. Although not required, attendance at the Arizona Forensic Science Basic Academy will be considered. Applications must be submitted electronically to ForSci@courts.az.gov by March 8, 2023. You will be notified whether you have been accepted for the course by March 15, 2023. Tuition will be due on March 20, 2023.
APAAC is not able to provide funding for either the academy registration fee or any travel-related expenses for attending the academy.\
