FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Keeping Our Greens Healthy Through Summer’s Toughest Conditions

If you’ve noticed some stress on the greens at Nina, Pinta and Ponce, you’re not alone. Like many golf facilities across Arkansas and the Mid-South, we’ve been battling an extended stretch of extreme summer temperatures that place significant stress on bentgrass putting surfaces.

The good news is that our team has already taken proactive steps to improve turf health, and we are encouraged by the early results. While recovery takes time and Mother Nature insists on reminding us she’s still in charge, we are optimistic that you’ll begin seeing continued improvements in the weeks ahead.

One of the most noticeable successes this summer has been the installation of new fans on several of our courses. These fans increase air movement across the greens, helping reduce heat stress and improve growing conditions during periods of prolonged high temperatures. We are already seeing a positive difference in the areas where they have been installed.

Associate Director of Golf Maintenance Henry Falgout and his team continue to work diligently each day to give our courses every opportunity to perform at their best. From carefully managing irrigation and moisture levels to adjusting daily maintenance practices and implementing additional cooling strategies, every decision is focused on protecting the long-term health of our putting surfaces.

Summer weather always presents challenges for cool-season bentgrass, but our maintenance team remains committed to preserving the quality and playability of our golf courses. We appreciate your patience and understanding as these recovery efforts continue, and we look forward to seeing healthier conditions develop as temperatures begin to moderate.

Thank you for your continued support as we work to provide the best possible golf experience for our members.

GOLF STAFF + PRO TIPS

Make Your Putting Practice Count

Putting accounts for a large portion of the shots played during a round, yet many golfers practice it without a clear purpose. Instead of simply rolling several balls toward a hole, divide your practice time among three important skills: starting direction, distance control, and short-putt confidence.

  • Start the ball on line: Place two tees slightly wider than your putter head to create a gate. Practice making strokes without touching either tee. You can also place a second gate several inches in front of the ball to check whether the putt starts on your intended line.
  • Improve distance control: Place a tee or club 18 to 24 inches beyond the hole. From 20, 30, and 40 feet, try to finish each putt past the hole but short of the marker. This drill helps reduce three-putts by improving your feel for speed.
  • Build confidence on short putts: Place four balls around a hole at distances of three to five feet. Make each putt before moving farther away. Focus on a consistent routine, a steady head, and a smooth stroke.

Quality is more important than quantity. Practicing with a specific target, routine, and goal for just 10 to 15 minutes can be more productive than hitting putts without a plan. Better distance control and greater confidence on short putts can quickly lead to lower scores.
