FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF

A Well-Earned Thank-You to Our Golf Team!

With just a few weeks left in the golf season, I want to thank the people who helped make this one of the best seasons ever recorded at Hot Springs Village.

Our golf shop staff and Player Assistants welcomed members and guests each day while handling increased play and the prolonged heat of July, August and September. It was a demanding season, and I’m proud of how they handled it.

Checking in golfers, preparing carts, answering questions and keeping play moving may seem routine, but doing those things well makes a difference. Our staff continued to offer friendly service and a helping hand, even on days when the tee sheets were full and the heat tested everyone’s patience.

Our golf professionals deserve special recognition for their work training and leading our teams throughout the year. Thank you to Head Golf Professionals Jennifer Birdrow and Champ Detamore, along with Assistant Golf Professional Jason Payne. Their guidance helped staff manage busy days, work through challenges and deliver the service our golfers expect.

Our Golf Department staff at Balboa and Call Center team also played a major role. Between tee time reservations, member services, package requests and coordinating play across eight courses, they handled countless details that helped keep the operation running smoothly. Their work is an essential part of the golfer’s experience, even when it happens away from the course.

Our maintenance crews faced their own challenges. Keeping bentgrass greens healthy through extended summer heat required careful moisture management, constant monitoring and adjustments to daily maintenance. We received a tremendous amount of positive feedback from members who said our courses were in better shape than they had been in years. The Board of Directors also recognized the conditions and the effort behind them.

There is always room to improve, and our crews continue to build on that progress through training, better processes and attention to the details that matter to golfers. They deserve credit for both the results we see today and the work they are doing to make next season better.

Special thanks go to Public Service Director Matt Broom, Todd Noles and their golf course construction team. Their accomplishments included the bridge and creek work at DeSoto that helped restore all 18 holes to play, drainage repairs at Magellan, cart path improvements and clubhouse landscaping. These were substantial projects that will benefit our courses and golfers for years to come.

We share this season’s success with our Marketing and Sales team as well. Director Lori Haight, Makenzie Gale, Kevin Sexton, and Laura Duggan put considerable effort into promoting HSV golf, supporting events and securing valuable sponsorships and donations for our courses. Much of their work takes place behind the scenes, but its impact is seen throughout our department.

I also want to thank General Manager Ken Unger for his leadership and continued commitment to improving Hot Springs Village golf. His support, together with the contributions of many other POA teams, helped us complete important projects and keep moving forward.

Along the way, we enjoyed club championships, league events and our Junior Spotlight Challenges. Those junior golfers gave us plenty to smile about—and reminded some of us that years of experience do not always translate into a win.

Eight courses, one team and a season to be proud of. Thank you to everyone who helped make it happen.

WGA 18 Club Championship: Two Great Days of Golf

Congratulations to Amy Jacobsen, the WGA 18 Overall Gross Champion, and Kathy Hendricks, the Overall Net Champion! Amy finished with a two-day gross score of 161, while Kathy earned the net title with a two-day total of 143.

The championship took place October 7 and 8 at Cortez and Granada, with great weather and course conditions setting the stage for two enjoyable days of competition. There was plenty to play for across the flights, along with a chance to enjoy some fall golf with friends.

Congratulations to the flight winners and runners-up:

Gold Flight 1

Net — First / Second - Jennifer Joyce / Rebecca Huber

Gold Flight 2

This year’s championship also included an Orange tee flight, giving ladies who chose those tees a more enjoyable and competitive tournament experience. It was a welcome addition that allowed shorter hitters and higher handicap players to compete from tees better suited to their games while still enjoying the challenge of championship competition. Hats off to the WGA 18 board and membership for this wonderful idea.

A special thank-you goes to the maintenance and golf shop staff at both courses, along with our golf professionals Jennifer Birdrow, Jason Payne and Champ Detamore. Their work preparing the courses and coordinating play helped make the championship a success.

Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you to everyone who participated. Good golf, great weather and time with friends made this a championship worth celebrating!

GOLF STAFF + PRO TIPS

Taking Care of the Course: Every Golfer Plays a Part

One of the great things about playing golf in Hot Springs Village is the variety and quality of our golf courses. Maintaining those conditions is a daily team effort involving our golf maintenance crews, golf operations staff, and—just as importantly—our players.

A few simple habits from every golfer can make a noticeable difference in course conditions and the experience of those playing behind you. This is especially important throughout the winter as everything goes dormant and will not heal until the spring.

Repair Ball Marks

A properly repaired ball mark can heal quickly, while an unrepaired or incorrectly repaired mark can damage the putting surface for weeks. When you reach the green, take a moment to repair your ball mark—and if you see another nearby, repair it too. A good goal is to leave every green a little better than you found it.

Replace or Fill Divots

Divots are part of the game, but leaving them unattended affects both course appearance and playing conditions. Follow the course's preferred procedure by replacing the divot or using the provided divot mix. Taking a few seconds after each shot can make a big difference when hundreds of golfers play the course each week.

Rake Bunkers for the Next Player

After playing from a bunker, please rake your footprints and the area where you played your shot. Enter and exit from the low side whenever possible and leave the bunker in the condition you would want to find it.

Be Smart with Golf Carts

Cart traffic has a significant impact on turf conditions. Please follow daily cart rules and directional signs, avoid wet or damaged areas, and keep carts away from greens, tees, and bunker edges. When conditions require cart restrictions, those decisions are made to protect the golf course and help maintain better playing conditions for everyone.

Keep Up with the Group Ahead

Good pace of play does not mean rushing. It means being ready when it is your turn, limiting unnecessary delays, and maintaining your position with the group ahead. Play ready golf when appropriate, select your club while others are playing, and keep practice swings reasonable. Small time savings throughout the round add up quickly.

Leave It Better Than You Found It

Great golf course conditions are a partnership. Our maintenance and golf operations teams work hard every day to provide an enjoyable experience, but players have an important role as well.

Repairing a ball mark, filling a divot, raking a bunker, following cart rules, and maintaining a good pace may seem like small things. When everyone does them, however, they have a tremendous impact.

Take care of the course, respect the players around you, and leave the course better than you found it.

USEFUL LINKS

These daily logs show golf-round activity, weather, and average pace of play at Granada, Magellan, Ponce, Isabella, and DeSoto. Balboa and Cortez will be published next week. Together they let you compare how conditions and POP were tracked across the courses.

GOLF CART CROSSINGS

Please remember, when you are crossing roads with a golf cart, you must stop and make sure that it is safe to pass. Vehicle traffic has the right of way. Please always be alert and be safe.

We continue to keep these crossings clear to see traffic approaching in both directions.
