FROM THE DIRECTOR OF GOLF

9-Hole Play Before 1 PM and Magellan Course Improvements

9-Hole Member Play Before 1 PM

The Golf Department would like to remind members of the current policy regarding 9-hole play before 1 PM.

  • Members may call the golf course after 12 PM the day prior to play to request a 9-hole tee time before 1 PM. Approval for 9-hole play during this time will be based on course demand and overall tee sheet availability.
  • When course demand is high, 9-hole play before 1 PM may only be allowed if the member pays the 18-hole green fee. In that situation, staff will charge the member a 9-hole cart fee instead of the full 18-hole cart fee.
  • When player demand is lower, a 9-hole green fee and 9-hole cart fee may be allowed at the discretion of the course assistant professional or course manager.
  • During the months of July and August, 9-hole play before 1 PM is allowed due to the excessive heat during that time of year. We appreciate members’ understanding as staff works to balance tee time availability, course demand, and member needs.

Magellan Course Improvement and Safety Projects

Several course improvement and safety projects are taking place at Magellan during aeration this week. Additional work will also take place June 16-18 to address several safety concerns on the front nine.

  • The planned improvements include cart path repairs, dead tree removal, and drainage improvements. Several safety-related drainage issues will also be addressed, including areas around drainage basins on holes 4, 5, and 7, where erosion has occurred around the base of the covers.
  • A larger drainage concern on hole 8 will also be repaired. In this area, water created an underground channel in the fairway that could have eventually collapsed if left unaddressed. This repair is being completed as a preventive safety measure and to protect the long-term condition of the golf course.
  • Crews will also address erosion along the creek behind hole 4, where the cart path crosses, and erosion has occurred near the edge of the path. The creek will be cleaned out, and rip rap will be installed to improve water flow and help stabilize the area.
  • In addition, the cart path crossings near the creek will be improved so carts can cross those areas more safely.
  • Magellan will be open for play Saturday and Sunday, June 13 and 14, and is scheduled to reopen for normal play beginning June 19.

We appreciate everyone’s patience as these important improvements are completed. While projects like this can be temporarily inconvenient, they are necessary to improve safety, protect course conditions, and continue moving our golf facilities forward.

Respectfully,

Gary Porter

PRO TIPS BY TOM HEFFER

HOW SYRINGING WORKS

When water is applied to the leaf surface, it evaporates, which draws heat away from the turf — a process called evaporative cooling. This can help:

  • Lower canopy (leaf) temperatures
  • Prevent or correct leaf water deficits (wilt).

The USGA Green Section notes that syringing is not about wetting the soil; it’s about wetting the surface to manage heat stress.

  • Cooling effect: Studies show syringing can reduce canopy temperature by less than 2°F and the cooling effect typically lasts only 10–30 minutes.
  • Impact with fans: When combined with aboveground fans, syringing produces more significant cooling and can lower soil temperatures, improving root health in creeping bentgrass.

In short: USGA syringing is a targeted, surface-level watering to manage heat stress on greens, with the most benefit when paired with other cooling measures like fans. It’s a tool for turf health, not a primary method for controlling speed or firmness.

GOLF CART CROSSINGS

Please remember, when you are crossing roads with a golf cart, you must stop and make sure that it is safe to pass. Vehicle traffic has the right of way. Please always be alert and be safe.

We continue to keep these crossings clear to see traffic approaching in both directions.
