Golf Committee Applicants Encouraged to Apply

The Golf Department is currently seeking HSV POA members who are interested in serving on the Golf Committee and being involved in the continued progress of golf in Hot Springs Village.

The Golf Committee serves an important advisory and support role for the Golf Department. Members of the committee work with the department to discuss golf-related matters, identify areas where member input may be helpful, support volunteer opportunities, and assist with projects that benefit the overall golf experience in the Village.

This committee is best suited for members who want to be actively involved. While regular meetings are part of the role, the committee also benefits from members who are willing to volunteer time, offer constructive feedback, and support the direction of the Golf Department in a positive and productive way.

With more than 6,000 active golfing members in Hot Springs Village, we know there are many members who care deeply about the game and the future of our golf program. Whether you are a longtime resident or newer to the Village, serving on the Golf Committee is a meaningful way to become more involved and contribute to the success of HSV Golf.

Ideal applicants are members who play regularly, understand the game, have golf-related experience or knowledge, and are interested in helping improve our courses, facilities, operations, and member experience. A willingness to listen, work with others, and support the department’s goals is also important.

The Golf Committee is made up of 7 to 9 POA members who are appointed by the Board of Directors. Applications are reviewed through the established POA committee appointment process and vetted through the Corporate Secretary’s office.

It is also important to understand the role of the committee. Golf Committee members do not direct POA staff, approve spending, commit POA funds, or act independently on behalf of the Golf Department. The committee’s role is to advise, assist, volunteer, and provide support in coordination with the Golf Department and committee leadership.

There are many positive things happening in HSV Golf, and there is still a great deal of work ahead. The Board, General Manager, and Golf Department remain committed to improving the golf experience throughout the Village. The Golf Committee gives members an opportunity to be part of that effort in a constructive and meaningful way.

Members interested in applying may do so through the Member Portal. Once logged in, go to the Governance tab, select Committees, and click on the application link.

If you are passionate about golf, play often, and want to help support the future of golf in Hot Springs Village, I encourage you to apply.

GOLF STAFF + PRO TIPS

Better Iron Play: Simple Tips and a Practice Plan

Good iron play isn’t about swinging harder, it’s about making solid, repeatable contact. A few simple fundamentals and a purposeful practice routine can make a noticeable difference in both distance control and accuracy.

Three Tips for Better Iron Shots

  1. Start with good setup. Play the ball roughly in the middle of your stance with short and mid-irons. Keep your weight balanced and your posture athletic. Longer irons can move slightly forward in your stance.
  2. Focus on ball-first contact. Your goal is to strike the ball before the turf. A helpful thought is to make your divot after the ball. Don’t try to lift the ball into the air, the club’s loft will do that for you.
  3. Swing within yourself. Trying to hit an iron as far as possible often leads to poor contact. A smooth, controlled swing produces more consistent strikes and, ultimately, more predictable distances.

A 30-Minute Iron Practice Plan

  • 5 minutes — Warm-up Start with short swings using a wedge or short iron. Concentrate on balance and solid contact rather than distance.
  • 10 minutes — Contact drill Put a tee in the ground about 2–3 inches behind the ball. Make swings without hitting the tee. The goal is to strike the ball first and take the divot on the target side of the ball.
  • 10 minutes — Distance control Choose three targets at different distances. Hit several shots to each target, changing clubs or swing length as necessary. Pay attention to how far your good shots carry rather than your longest shot.
  • 5 minutes — On-course simulation Pick a series of targets as though you're playing a few holes. Go through your normal pre-shot routine before every ball. Change clubs and targets rather than simply hitting the same shot repeatedly.

One Thought to Take to the Course

Instead of thinking about all the mechanics of the golf swing, pick one simple thought: “Solid contact.” Commit to a smooth swing, trust the club's loft, and let the ball get in the way.

The best iron players aren't necessarily the ones who hit every shot perfectly. They are the ones who make solid contact often, know their distances, and manage their misses.
