We're Growing!
We Need Coaches & Team Parents for Spring Season
Player enrollment for the Spring 2018 season is up. Who's going to coach all of these new players? Who's going to be the team parent for all of the new teams? Why not you? At the younger levels, you don't need much experience with baseball, just an interest in helping kids learn, have fun as a team, and most of all, a positive and encouraging attitude. We provide training, guidelines, rules, and lots of practice ideas. If coaching isn't your thing, but you've got a flare for communication or a knack for organizing, how about becoming a team parent?

To register as a coach or team parent, please visit our website . Once you are registered, we will contact you to discuss your assignment and the next steps to get you started.

If you have questions about coaching here are the commissioners for each of our levels:
Slam Dunk for Challengers
Our Challengers were lucky to once again play basketball with their own personal pack of "guards"  this weekend. A HUGE thanks to the Arlington Travel Basketball coaches and players for their caring and support of our players. We value our community partnership with ATB, and are so proud of players on both teams for helping make hoop dreams come true!

Coach's Corner
by ALL Safety Officer, Matt Carlson
Did your player get a new bat for Christmas, but it seems defective because it has "no pop"?  Don't take it back to the store just yet; the bat may be performing exactly as intended.  The new bat standards in effect for 2018 are designed to make metal bats perform more like wood bats.  This means the ball should not be hit as far or as hard as before.  I have seen some reports finding a 5%-7% decrease in distance, but I am curious to see how the new bats actually perform this season. My guess is there will still be plenty of homeruns hit out of Barcroft this spring.

The Umpire Strikes Back
by Chief Umpire, Steve Sundbeck
Happy New Year!  Opening day is less than three months away and with registrations once again rising fast, one thing is clear-there are a lot of opportunities in our umpire program!  Perfect for those recent graduates of the league (or their siblings) and for those parents who want to help the league, but whose commitments may not allow regularly assisting a team. We're open to whatever frequency works, from occasional gigs to multiple games per week.

We recruit and train a quality junior umpire corps, and we are looking for adult volunteers to join our program as well.   I view our junior umpire program as an extension of the Little League mission to build good and decent citizens--teaching responsibility, poise, and how to handle occasional stressful situations.   It's a great "first job" experience.  Of course, most of the umpires see it as a good way to make a little money while still being around baseball.

Per Little League philosophy, we don't wish to pay for adult umpires and haven't been doing so.   We have a small, but dedicated, crew to pitch in on our upper-level games and District tournament responsibilities.  Most, like me, just enjoy the heck out of the game of baseball and appreciate that there is a way to stay involved while giving back to the community.

Of course, we don't just throw anyone (junior or adult) out there to fend for themselves!  We provide rules and situational training for our new recruits on Monday evenings in March (away from spring break) and one Saturday morning (weather permitting.)  We can make alternative arrangements as well for those interested who have schedule conflicts.  And I'm always available for rules clarifications and other advice.

If you're interested, or have questions, please drop me a line at umpire@arlingtonlittleleague.org I'll be happy to provide further details and sign you up for our mailing list.  We're just starting to get organized, so now's the time to sign up!

Sponsor a Little League Team
ALL sends out a big "thank you" to one of our sponsors, Evoke Consulting. Greg Blaisdell, the firm's President and Managing Partner, is a coach and ALL Dad, dedicating his personal time to bring baseball to Arlington's kids.
Headquartered in Arlington's lively Ballston neighborhood, Evoke Research and Consulting stands out among consulting firms because of the values its leaders and employees live and breathe: a belief that their responsibilities extend beyond client services and the corporate balance sheet.

Evoke's commitment to Arlington runs deep. Each employee contributes time and energy to make a positive impact simply because it is "the right thing to do". In addition to supporting Arlington sports (baseball, soccer and the Arlington Sports Commission) Evoke has made significant charitable investments in Arlington contributing both time and money. Each year employees put together care packages for service members serving overseas, collect and donate school supplies, serve meals to the homeless, and build dozens of bikes to give away to local kids at Christmas. Evoke also sent a relief team to Houston for a week to help rebuild after hurricane Irma. Plans are underway to travel to Puerto Rico as soon as it is practical.

We are honored to have Evoke Consulting as a premier ALL partner, sponsoring a team at every level for 5 years running. We are inspired by their generosity and strive to deserve their continued support. Their motto says it all "Who doesn't need more Evoke?"
