You can earn one (1) or both of these two (2) designation/certifications by taking and successfully passing the examination offered at the end of class.


AFL, ALOA Fundamental Locksmithing Designation

and/or

CLL, Certified Licensed Locksmith Certification exam if you are in from Louisiana or Alabama. (This exam is required to apply for locksmith license in those states.)

Course Description


The ALOA Continuing Education (ACE) 5-day Basic Locksmithing Course will provide you with basic hands-on knowledge of locks and security-related hardware. Students will work with basic locksmithing tools such as dial calipers, impressioning, pliers, lock pick set, along with other locksmith specialty tools.


Upon completion of this course, you will have the knowledge required to function as an apprentice locksmith who can perform the following tasks:


identify and duplicate keys

service and adjust key machines

rekey a variety of lock cylinders

make original keys for a variety of locks

code disassembly and impressioning

bypass and/or pick common locks

troubleshoot and service common cylinder and lockset malfunctions

identify common lock hardware finishes and functions

become aware of Life Safety Codes and the ADA

design and key a simple master key system

know combination lock operation and changing methods

7:30 am until 5:00 Daily

  • Hotel Reservations: ALOA does not handle hotel bookings.
  • Transportation: The hotel does not offer a courtesy shuttle; guests are responsible for their own transportation to and from the hotel.
  • Parking: Complimentary parking is available for ALOA guests.
  • Dining: The hotel restaurant and bar are closed during lunch but reopen for dinner at 4:00 PM.

Notice on Class Limit and Safety

  • Class Size Adjustments: In compliance with restrictions for gatherings, class sizes may be reduced 30 days prior to the event. This could result in cancellations.
  • Refund Policy: Full refunds will be issued if a class is canceled.
  • Safety Protocols: Adhering to current safety recommendations is a priority. Masks and hand sanitizers will be available upon request.
  • Hotel Policies: Verify the hotel's cancellation policy independently. ALOA is not liable for hotel bookings or their cancellation policies.
  • Apprentice Memberships: Offered to non-members meeting specific criteria.

Certificate & Testing

  • Certificate of Training: Participants will receive a certificate acknowledging 48 CEU hours completed. Note, this is not a certification.
  • Licensing Exams: Residents of Louisiana or Alabama requiring the CLL for licensing will take the "CLL" exam on Friday afternoon.
  • Testing Schedule: The ALOA Fundamentals Locksmith (AFL) exam will be conducted on Friday afternoon, tailored to this training.
  • Results Notification: Expect to receive your test results via email within 3 to 4 weeks.
