Compassion.
At Collier Orthotics & Prosthetics, our practitioners listen to their patients.
Whether their issue is short-term, and especially when it is long-term. We want to understand the emotional journey of our patients to better help them with their physical progress.

Case Study - Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)

Mr. Cutchlow came to see Collier Practitioner Ray Diaz for a new pair of braces, and expressed frustration with his instability. Upon evaluation, Ray noticed that the patient had more than just weak inverters/evertors, he also had no plantar flexion and dorsiflexion strength.

Patient Challenge: The previous AFOs (Arizona braces) were not picking up his foot, causing him to buckle and fall when ambulating.

Collier Resolution: Ray introduced the Phat braces to Mr. Cutchlow. These braces will provide the stance control and swing phase, and resolve the weak medial lateral ankle instability. The Arizona braces provided nothing for the absent plantar and dorsiflexion.

Staff Profile
Erin Morphy-Lum

Erin started working for Collier Pleasant Hill in October 2008. She wears several hats: coordinate patient scheduling, acting as a liaison between patient and practitioner, insurance authorizations, costs of sales reports, and product ordering.
"I love hearing from patients and how happy they are with the way they are treated here. Hearing their success stories about how their device has made a difference in their lives is great! I also enjoy problem solving; finding solutions to unanticipated situations."

Erin enjoys hiking with her dog, cooking, riding her bike, and floating in the pool after a hard day's work. She recently married her boyfriend of 8 years, and they have 5 kids. "Most are grown," she says, "but the red headed 10 year old daughter remains - wish us luck with that one!"

Powered AFOs: New Roles for Evolving Technology

The power-assist AFO developers uncovered more than originally envisioned. The rehabilitative potential of their device offer the ability to program repeatable settings which could allow a patient to don the AFO at home, hit a button, and begin the prescribed therapy.
