In June, 2021, the WHSAA Scholarship Committee awarded
33 graduating seniors $46,750 in scholarships.

Here’s a snapshot of the recipients:

17 males and 16 females received scholarships

The schools they are attending include Rutgers Newark and New Brunswick, NJIT, NJ City, Fordham, St. Francis, Kean, Lincoln and Drew Universities, and Lincoln Technical School.

They are majoring in computer science, biology, engineering, criminal justice and social services.

While in school (mostly remote), these students managed to achieve 2.60 - 4.0 GPAs. They participated in the National Honor Society, Poetry Club, Stand & Deliver, JAG (Jobs for America’s Graduates), softball, basketball, track, robotics, band, track and field, football and various community service projects--either remotely or under very strict protocols.

We were also able to provide financial support to 11 prior year scholarship recipients who are currently in their 2nd, 3rd or senior year of college.

We paid out a total of $53,500 in scholarships
during 2021

FUNDRAISING INITIATIVES:

The Alumni Legacy Walk

We are still taking orders for bricks to be installed in the walkway at the front entrance of the school. The link to purchase a brick is on our website (Brick Order Website). You can buy one for yourself, a family member or friend, or even on behalf of your class. Because we do not install them, we need to have a certain number sold in order for the school district to include it in their work schedule.

The Mural Restoration Project

The Enlightenment of Man murals, in the front foyer of the school, are overdue for a restoration.  The murals were painted by Michael Lenson as part of the Federal Arts Projects- of the Works Project Administration, and they were installed in 1939. The State of New Jersey Historic Preservation Office arranged for a significant contribution toward this project several years ago. However, more funds are needed in order to get the work done. If you’d like to make a donation, please send a check to the WHSAA, Post Office Box 494, Newark, NJ 07101, with “Mural Donation” in the memo line.

THE WHS ALUMNI ASSOCIATION
BOARD OF TRUSTEES

We are always on the lookout for a few good Board members. We are especially seeking individuals who have legal and/or fundraising experience. If you are interested, please send a resume to weequahicalumni@gmail.com. We are a 501(c)3 organization and our primary mission is to raise funds for scholarships. We have a solid and productive relationship with the school and hope to be able to support our students well into the future. It’s a volunteer position; however, knowing that you’ve made a difference in the life of a student is a great paycheck!

AGAIN, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND WE WISH YOU A HAPPY, HEALTHY AND PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!
