The Advanced Manufacturing of Thermal and Environmental Controls (AM-TEC) project is a collaborative initiative designed to strengthen the cluster of Central New York manufacturers of systems that heat and cool buildings, refrigerate produce, control manufacturing processes, and enable a variety of other applications.

Ephesus Lights up the Superbowl

From Onondaga County's War Memorial to the University of Phoenix Stadium that hosted the Super Bowl, installations of a new product developed by a young firm in Upstate New York are transforming the market for lighting in sporting venues.
Compared to traditional technologies, LED fixtures developed by Ephesus Lighting achieve dramatic reductions in energy and maintenance costs, and improve experiences for athletes and spectators.
To date, the lights have been installed at more than 100 sports and entertainment venues across the U.S. and Canada.
75% Less Energy for 50 Years
At the University of Phoenix Stadium, 312 Ephesus fixtures replaced 753 metal-halide lamps. The Ephesus installation is expected to use 75 percent less energy and the fixtures are rated to last 50 years. In addition, the LED technology provides full illumination instantly, in contrast to the 20-minute warm-up period required by metal-halide lamps, eliminating the risk of lengthy blackouts after a power outage at major sporting events, like that seen at the 2013 Super Bowl XLVIII in New Orleans.
Ephesus Lighting is a shining example of Governor Cuomo's vision for creating jobs via collaborations between companies and universities and colleges.
Founders Amy and Joe Casper tapped a broad array of resources available to start-up companies in New York State, including business incubation by CenterState CEO at the Syracuse Technology Garden and research and development capabilities at multiple universities, including: SyracuseCoE at Syracuse University, Smart System Technology and Commercialization Center of SUNY Polytechnic Institute, Lighting Research Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Alfred University, Binghamton University, and Clarkson University. In 2012, Ephesus received support from the SyracuseCoE Commercialization Assistance Program.

$3.2M to Develop Revolutionary Personalized Heating and Cooling Device

Syracuse University was recently awarded a $3.2 million grant from the Energy Department's Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) to develop innovative new technologies that regulate temperatures for each person inside an office building, rather than heating or cooling the whole building itself. Syracuse University's Professor H. Ezzat Khalifa will lead the team of researchers to develop a near-range micro-environmental control system. The team hopes to create an affordable system that can condition only the space immediately surrounding an individual user rather than all of the space in an office, saving a great deal of energy. Such an innovation could revolutionize the way offices are heated and cooled. Could save 15% of the building energy used for heating and cooling SyracuseCoE scientists aided the project team in the development of the proposal and will be key players in the execution of the research, including bringing the technology to market. |
New Labs Opening at SyracuseCoE HQ

New laboratories are under construction at SyracuseCoE Headquarters and include facilities to focus on combustion and thermal power systems; biofuel production; flow visualization; and smart buildings technologies. Construction is slated to be finished in February of 2015 with an opening celebration later in the spring.

In the Flow Visualization Lab, we use both qualitative observations and quantitative flow measurements to investigate and characterize the dynamics in vortex-dominated hydrodynamic flow fields.
Biofuels Development Facility (BDF) SUNY ESF
The SUNY-ESF Biofuels Pilot Plant at SyracuseCoE represents a key facility in the production of next generation bio-based fuels derived from renewable resources such as locally grown woody feedstocks including planation-grown willow, switchgrass, and forest-based biomass.

SyracuseCoE leads the federally funded initiative in Advanced Manufacturing in Thermal and Environmental Controls (AM-TEC). Our AM-TEC initiative includes assistance for research and development, technology to market, manufacturing process improvement, increasing exports, workforce training, and local sourcing.

Held on the 1st Tuesday of each month from 3:30pm-5:00pm, TEC Tuesdays offer presentations, factory tours and networking opportunities for cluster manufacturers and suppliers.

Online and self-paced Certified Production Technician (CPT) training is open to the public at no or low cost, including registration, online access and supporting webinars, all course materials, and one attempt at each applicable module assessment (re-testing is available for $40 per test) leading to nationally recognized ANSI certification. Registration options and cost as follows:
- Green Production Module Free; note that this module covers greening of the production process, not the production of green products
- Safety, Quality Practices & Measurement, Manufacturing Processes & Production, Maintenance Awareness, plus Green Production modules $400; successful completion of an assessment test for each of the first 4 listed modules results in the award of the full CPT certification
