NEWS FROM MOORHALL

Hello everybody. Hope you are all OK wherever you are in the World. Life continues to be pretty good here, although I am looking forward to some improved weather. I like it a bit warmer than it has been.

Well it was with much regret that we had to postpone Matthews course. Covid hit our family and it was too risky we felt to carry on with the course. However the good news is that Matthew rescheduled his course for September 30th, October 1st and 2nd. This is great news and an opportunity for those who couldn't make the earlier course before, to do so now.
We have had a brilliant 3 day course here with Amanda Clayton 'On the Edge'. Mandy is such a kind, warm generous tutor and I am sure all the students will be saying the same. More about her course and samples of what the students were up too, come later in this newsletter. Amanda will be back in September of this year if anyone is interested in a very meditative stitch workshop. Details on my website.

And just before moving on from Matthew and Amanda I just need to introduce you to the latest two members of our family......... here is MATT and MANDY. Matt is the brown faced lamb and Mandy the black faced one. I am sure I will have some related poem for you next time!!!!!
Before showing you the work produced on Amanda's course, let me remind you of a few courses coming up VERY SOON with places still on them. All courses will run but I would very much welcome a few more students. It is worth contacting me at the last moment as I may still have places and be able to accommodate you.
COURSES
POLLY POLLOCK
21/22/23 April
'A group of Similar Things'
Course Description

I know I have mentioned this course a few times already. I did have enough students at one point so know that this will be a popular course. However several have had to cancel which means there are spaces for you.

The relationships between textiles and basketry is very strong, especially when dealing with coiling which involves stitch. It can be used for making anything from beautifully simple basketry forms through to free-form experimental structures - there are very few rules, just some basic techniques. Do come along and try this out for yourself. You will leave this course with enough material, knowledge and ideas to continue.

Polly has been teaching at the City Lit in Covent Garden, London for over 25 years so comes here with plenty of knowledge and experience. She has more recently been accepted as a member of the Textile Study Group.

SARAH BURGESS
3/4/5 May
'Chasing more Shadows'
Course Description

Fleeting images, reflections and constantly shifting shadows are our starting points. We will work with the student’s own imagery; such as plant and tree forms, reflections and shadows on water or man-made structures, as our design starting points.

Participants will create and record their own disrupted surfaces and experimental shadows following a series of structured exercises. Working with a range of opaque and semi-transparent papers and materials we will use mono-type printing to explore positive and negative prints, after- images and layering. We will investigate stitch both as a printing surface and in experimental shadow work using hand or machine stitch as preferred.

Participants will have the opportunity to produce a range of highly individual and atmospheric pieces culminating in more resolved personal work supported by discussion and individual tutorials.

RUTH KIRKBY

'Discovering Landscapes in Watercolour'
Course Description

In this one-day workshop Ruth will investigate first of all ways of using watercolour to depict landscape, simply but effectively. Then she will go on to explore some interesting techniques to build on these initial stages.
She likes to demonstrate the techniques herself, then provide support whilst participants explore the methods themselves. Bring along any photographs of landscapes that you would like to use as source material. This course is suitable for beginners and intermediate.
Ruth has won Gold and Silver RHS medals for Botanical Illustration, and is very familiar with the rules of watercolour painting.
