There are always those special special coaches in an organization that are always there when you need them. Wende Preston and Todd Floyd are exactly that, ALWAYS THERE to give back to the hockey community, always there to help with Austin Future Stars, Learn to Skate, evaluations at tryouts, and the list goes on. The energy, happiness, and overall excitement that Wende and Todd bring to the rink is something that's contagious for everybody around. The AMHA is lucky to have Wende and Todd, and thank you so much for everything you do for the families.
Please make sure to stop Wende and Todd and the rink and give them a big thank you!

Team Manager of the Month
|
Tiffany English
We would love to recognize Tiffany English as our Team Manager of Month. Tiffany, without hesitation, jumped in to be the team manager for not one, but TWO Rising Stars teams this season. She has been more than equal to the task, and we are extremely happy to have her as part of our Rising Stars and AMHA family.

Hockey Co. Players Update
THCo. (12U,14U,16U)
Still continuing on skating fundamentals for the first part of each practice. Progressing into our flow/shooting drill with the focus on controlling the puck, giving and receiving passes, shooting with speed, looking at your target, and hitting the net.
Then into odd man situations focussing on the responsibilities for the defensive players and options for the offensive of players.
Ending practice with small area games with high intensity and lots of reps.
See everyone on the ice!

Hockey Co. Goalie Update
Goaltenders will be building on the solid foundation established with more challenging scenarios and progressions in the new year. Layering saves and creating more gameplay situations where battling for the puck while relying on fundamental technique and movement is required.
Looking forward to the new year and increasing the complexity and intensity.

Smarthockey Update
Another great month on the ice. The kids continue to work hard and get better. We have been continuing to work on creating speed with crossovers and being explosive. Using the crossover to change direction with the puck and gain an advantage on the defender.
This month we are concentrating on heads up play with stick-handling, passing and shooting. Our goals are to have the kids rolling their wrists to control the puck and gaining a "feel" for the puck so they can play more with their heads up. Same for shooting and passing - Head Up.
Please email me videos of your players working on their stick-handling and shooting at home. If you have questions or want my input on a video, I would love to help out any way I can.
See you at the rink.

Hockey Director's Corner
I know this article says "10u" but the material in this article is a MUST READ for all our players at all levels.
Do our players know what makes them a good teammate? Do they say they do, but not really know? Do we as coaches, parents, and leaders want to be able to have the answer? This article will help the leaders teach good teammate skills. Enjoy!!!!

D1 Update
Starting the new year right, the AMHA athletes trained through D1 are currently participating in a program focused on building longevity endurance, strength and stability. Each one a key component in overall athletic ability and translates directly to the ice. Our main objective is to prevent injuries, improve coordination, improve on individual strengths and build stamina for each athletes best performance. Our trainers have seen tremendous progress and enthusiasm from each athlete and as we progress into February, focus will move to muscular endurance with higher volume reps paired with plyometrics.
We are looking forward to another amazing month with the AMHA athletes!

Official's Corner
As the NHL season gets rolling for this month, I want to let you know about a great and helpful site for referees and anyone interested in looking at the game from this perspective:
There is a ton of information on this site.
Particularly, this site summarizes the coaches challenges throughout the season and provides a synopsis for each.
It's a great way to learn the game even further!
