This fundraiser is the most fun you can have answering questions.

What other fundraiser gives you a recess when you can go and play? You can climb the lasagna look out, visit the engine house, or go down the illusion tunnel.

Conservator Hack - Asbestos

Asbestos was used up until the 1990s as a fire-retardant and an insulator in many household appliances and products, and in many construction materials. When asbestos dries out, it can crack and crumble, and release asbestos fibres that are 100 times thinner than a human hair. When these fibres are inhaled, they pose a health risk that can lead to serious respiratory conditions.

Museums may find asbestos present in a wide variety of artifacts such as kitchen items and appliances (irons, kettles, ironing board covers, stoves), automobiles, theatre scenery, dioramas, fireplaces, furniture (couches) and military, mining and fire-fighting clothing and equipment.

Collecting Stories
A Project

The Manitoba Agricultural Museum is launching an exciting project to celebrate Manitoba 150!
Are you a farmer in Manitoba? Do you know farmers in Manitoba, or did your ancestors farm in Manitoba? Then you can contribute to our Farmers of Manitoba - Collecting Stories project!

We are looking for contributions from all over Manitoba to represent the diversity of our province's farmers! They will be added to our collections and used as materials to create our Farmers of Manitoba exhibit this summer.

Contributions can be sent to the museum until April 15, 2020.

Stand up for Arts & Culture!
Message from Manitoba for the Arts

90% of Manitobans take part in the arts, but only 48% identify as “arts people" says a recent poll quoted in (an) editorial in (the) Winnipeg Free Press.

We know that Manitobans - including you - want arts and culture to flourish in Winnipeg and throughout Manitoba, and want to ensure that all citizens can access the arts. The City of Winnipeg budget is being tabled on Friday, March 6 and the Provincial Budget being presented next Wednesday, March 11 – it is time to act! 
Emergency Management Strategy

Manitoba experiences extreme weather events and natural hazards such as tornadoes, wildfires and high water levels. For those of us who work in or volunteer at a heritage institution, the question is how to prepare our museum, historic site, art gallery or historical societies for such an event.

The Association of Manitoba Museums (AMM) is developing a strategy based on the mainstream emergency management principles of Risk Assessment, Mitigation, Response and Recovery.

A self-guided handbook based on the first two principles - Risk Assessment and Mitigation – is being launched soon for AMM members to download and work on for their own institution, at their own pace. In preparation for this, Jane Dalley, the AMM Cultural Stewardship Program conservator, would like four (4) volunteer institutions to test-drive the handbook. Jane will work with the volunteer institutions directly to obtain feedback and provide advice and assistance.

She would like to work with a rural or northern museum; an urban institution; a small institution; and a large institution. There is no cost, but a commitment and motivation to complete the process is required. Interested institutions can contact Jane at conservator@museumsmanitoba.com

This course provides an overview of how to plan and manage a move to avoid the many pitfalls. The course will help you define the scope of your project, develop a work plan and schedule, prepare a communication scheme, define proposals for vendors, choose equipment, estimate costs, identify hazards, organize staffing, and establish packing techniques and standards.
