Emergency Management Strategy

Manitoba experiences extreme weather events and natural hazards such as tornadoes, wildfires and high water levels. For those of us who work in or volunteer at a heritage institution, the question is how to prepare our museum, historic site, art gallery or historical societies for such an event.

The Association of Manitoba Museums (AMM) is developing a strategy based on the mainstream emergency management principles of Risk Assessment, Mitigation, Response and Recovery.

A self-guided handbook based on the first two principles - Risk Assessment and Mitigation – is being launched soon for AMM members to download and work on for their own institution, at their own pace. In preparation for this, Jane Dalley, the AMM Cultural Stewardship Program conservator, would like four (4) volunteer institutions to test-drive the handbook. Jane will work with the volunteer institutions directly to obtain feedback and provide advice and assistance.

She would like to work with a rural or northern museum; an urban institution; a small institution; and a large institution. There is no cost, but a commitment and motivation to complete the process is required. Interested institutions can contact Jane at [email protected]
