Dreaming Reparative Musicologies in a Paranoid Time

Video Link

The 2023 President's Endowed Plenary Lecture, delivered by Suzanne Cusick, stages one scholar’s struggle to find reparative positions from which to do the intellectual work of musicology amid the swirling tangle of public and disciplinary paranoia that, to a greater or lesser extent, afflicts all of our intellectual lives.

Scott Joplin's

Ragtime

In the lecture recital, Scott Joplin's Ragtime, distinguished performer and scholar Marilyn Nonken explores the music of Scott Joplin (1868-1917) and his collaborators Scott Hayden (1882-1915), Arthur Marshall (1881-1968), and Louis Chauvin (1882-1908).

Lisette: A Song's Journey from Haiti and Back

In Lisette: A Song’s Journey from Haiti and Back, Jean Bernard Cerin and Nicholas Mathew trace the circuitous history of “Lisette quitté la plaine,” the oldest surviving song text in early Haitian Creole, arranged several times between the 1750s and the 1940s.

Additional videos from the AMS-SMT 2023 Joint Annual Meeting will be released next month.
