This symposium will be held, online and in person, on 18 March and will explore the best ways to teach students about vernacular musical cultures. Play Guitar with the Ventures!: How Amateurs Reshaped Rock 'n' Roll

Join us at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on 16 March for an AMS/RRHoF Lecture by Brian Wright on the impact of amateur rock ‘n’ roll bands in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Drawing on the work of Ruth Finnegan, internal musical instrument industry documents, and previously unexamined home-market pedagogical texts, Wright will reconstruct this vibrant and widespread amateur musical culture.

Organizations interested in holding pre-conference events as part of the 2023 AMS-SMT Joint Annual Meeting may now submit reservation requests. Pre-conference event space is granted on a first-come, first-served basis, as space allows. Pre-conference organizers must cover their own catering, A/V, and related expenses.
