As of February 5, 2021, all regions of the State of Illinois are in Phase 4 of the COVID mitigations. During this stage, massage therapy can be conducted with the limitation of both client and practitioner wearing a mask that covers both their mouth and nose during the session. There is no limit to the time or need for medical necessity documentation at this time.

COVID is still active in the United Sates, so following CDC recommendations for cleaning and maintaining a safe environment need to be continued. There should be time in between sessions, so thorough cleaning and ventilation can be completed. Temperatures should be checked to ensure the client does not have a fever. Thorough hand washing before and after a session should continue. Social distancing when applicable should be followed.

The Government Relations Committee will be working with the Governor’s office, legislative offices and state departments around education of massage therapy indications and benefits, so there is better information regarding the necessity for massage therapy. The objective is to bring a better understanding of the need to keep massage therapy accessible to the public.
