Greetings Chapter Members!

Happy Fall! We hope you had a wonderful summer and had time to relax a little. This summer we sent 3 board members and 2 delegates to the National Convention. As I attended the Presidents Council meeting prior to Convention, and in speaking with the rest of the Board, we gained new insight and suggestions on how other chapters operate. We hope these new ideas and suggestions will be put into effect and benefit you, our members.

At the 2022 National Convention in Cleveland Amelia Mitchell received this year’s Maryland Chapter Meritorious Award for her tremendous work with the Chapter and Government Relations. Amelia was unanimously nominated for the award by the MD Chapter Board. Once received, her daughter will be presented with the plaque.

On September 16, 2022 the Anne Arundel County Executive approved bill 76-22 which creates a massage establishment license. This bill will go into effect October 31, 2022. This bill creates a massage therapy establishment license requirement. It also designates the authority to administer and enforce the licensing provisions. 

Massage Therapy Establishment is defined as: 

⦁ A location where one or more persons are offering, purporting to offer, holding themselves out as providing or administering massage therapy onsite or offsite; or

⦁ One or more persons offering, overseeing, or sending a person or persons to offer, provide, or administer massage therapy at a clients residence or other location in the county selected by a client, whether or not operating from a fixed location, except for a person licensed or registered under § 6-301 of the health occupations article of the state code who is operating as a sole practitioner and engaging in massage therapy only at the Licensee’s residence or at a client’s residence or other location selected by a client. 

⦁ Massage Therapy Establishment does not include a location where all the individuals providing massage therapy are not required to have a license or registration under § 6-301 of the health occupations article of the state code. 

The Application will require the following information:

⦁ The names and addresses of the applicant and all owners, operators, and managers of the massage therapy establishment.

⦁ The location of the massage therapy establishment and the names and addresses of all lessees and owners of the real property where the establishment is located.

⦁ The names and addresses of all persons providing massage therapy at the massage therapy establishment. 

⦁ Copies of all licenses and registrations for persons identified in subparagraph III. 

⦁ The applicant shall report any changes to the information contained in the application to the director in writing within 30 days of those changes. 

The fee for this license will be $25 and the license will be good for 5 years from the date of issue. 

What does that mean for me? 

⦁ If you own a massage therapy business in AACO you may be required to obtain a Massage Therapy Establishment License. 

⦁ If you are a sole proprietor working out of your personal residence or providing mobile massage at the client’s location of choice you are exempt and do not need a massage therapy establishment license. 

⦁ If you have more than one massage therapy business in AACO you will need to get a separate license for each location. 

⦁ If you sublease from someone the leaser must provide your information in their application for Massage Therapy Establishment license.

Do you have a creative hand? The Maryland Chapter is looking to design a new chapter pin. Each state has a tradition of trading state pins at the National Convention. Above is what the current pin looks like.  

General Rules of the Contest:

⦁ The contest will run October 1 – 31, 2022. Designs are due October 31.

⦁ Design should be no more than 5 colors.

⦁ Artwork must be submitted electronically to Chelsea Adams-Cook at ⦁ Secretary1.AMTA.Maryland@gmail.com by October 31st. 

⦁ The AMTA Maryland Board will review all designs and vote on the top five at our board meeting in November.

⦁ Contest of the top five will run during the first two weeks of December.

⦁ Winners will be announced the week before Christmas.

Pin Guidelines:

⦁ Pin needs to be Maryland themed.

⦁ Pin should have “AMTA” or “MD AMTA” somewhere on it.

⦁ Pins should not contain any year so that we can use this design over multiple years.

⦁ Please take into consideration that the design will be reduced to a pin once finalized.  

⦁ Pins cannot contain any copyrighted material.

Reminder: License renewal is October 1 – 31, 2022 through the Maryland Massage State Board of Massage Therapy Examiners. Late renewal is November 1 – 30, 2022.

Mandatory CEUs, Mandatory Implicit Bias Training, Electives, and CPR Certification:

⦁ 7 Mandatory CEUs:

⦁ Ethics or Jurisprudence: 3 Hours

⦁ Communicable Diseases include HIV/AIDS: 3 Hours

⦁ Diversity or Cultural Competency: 1 Hour

⦁ Mandatory Implicit Bias Training: 1 Hour (This one-time training course is required by Md. Code Ann., Health Occupations § 1-225. The Board voted to allow 1 elective CEU hour for the completion of the Implicit Bias course in this renewal cycle only.)

⦁ Electives: 16 Hours in Massage Therapy

⦁ Must possess an unexpired CPR certificate (LMTs Healthcare Provider Level & RMPs Basic CPR) at the time of renewal.

Carryover CEUs: If you completed elective CEUs between November 1, 2018, and June 30, 2021, you are able to apply those courses to the 16 electives for the 2022 renewal cycle. Input the course information in the online renewal portal.
