Texas Chapter President - Brenda Padilla

Hello everyone and Happy October!

I want to first say Happy Birthday and Happy AMTA Anniversary to all our October birthdays and anniversaries. Blessing and abundance to all for a great and successful year.

Time is flying by! Since our last newsletter a great many things have happened here at the Texas Chapter. First of all, the National AMTA Convention happened in Cleveland Ohio August 27-29, 2022. It was so refreshing to see old friends, new friends and other awesome people in person! Hugs and Happiness were abound and I just drank it in. I felt like a kid in the candy store – enjoying what I had and wanting more. At opening sessions, we were greeted by Michelle Colizza, the National President, given status of the organization by Bill Brown our Executive Director and then had a wonderful keynote speaker – Michael Phelps! He promoted self-care and mental health as his words gave us inspiration for our futures. The classes were extremely eye opening and very educational too. A small piece of advice is to document, document, document! Vendor Hall and Closing ceremonies were just as spectacular. One line that tends to stay with me is “Commit – Then figure it out.” That is what I did to become your president. I had a list of things that I wanted to see happen in the Chapter so I committed! I, I mean we, myself

and our awesome board are doing just that. There have been some great strides happening right here in Texas! We now have many Regions and still trying to grow more. Let me see – North Houston, North Austin, Heart of Texas, Brownwood, and our leaders of the Regions – El Paso. We are working on more Regions – possible Panhandle, Corpus Christi, East Texas, Dallas, Fort Worth, San Antonio and?? Maybe your area is next! This is the best way to keep “Community over Competition”. Remember we are here for each other. The only way to grow is together! Keep reading to learn more about what has been going on in the Regions.

Many of you have seen in Facebook some sneak peeks of our 2023 State Convention. If all contracts go well (cross your fingers – the gals have been working so very hard to make this happen) the Texas Chapter 2023 State Convention may be in EL PASO Texas!! I’m so excited but I can’t say too much more. Official announcements will come out as soon as we know. Great plans are happening and I can’t wait to share. We will have great instructors, awesome food and of course a homerun of fun! That is all I can say. Keep watching the Newsletters and emails for more information.

At the National Convention, I was pinned as the new president of the Texas Chapter. It was exciting and I felt such responsibility and pride. As promised, I will do everything I can with the help of our awesome board to make Texas the Best Chapter in all of AMTA. There are times when I can use your help too. Just give us a shout out if you can to get involved. No this is not the overwhelming help – this is the guidance help for your Region. I do appreciate all that you do (in the various roles you have) for the Massage Profession now, the future of Massage and the future of the Texas Chapter AMTA. Reach out to one of us with your ideas, time and commitment. Just Commit – then we will figure it out together!

Thank you!!!!!

Veronica

Veronica Ortega, LMT

Secretary

Hello

I am Veronica Ortega, Texas Chapter Secretary. I live in El Paso, where the star on the Franklin Mountains shines bright.

My thriving 20 year plus business is The Wholesome Body. Massage therapy is a true calling and I answered. It is a ride that I am happy to continue growing and learning.

I am grateful to be included in a region that loves to build community and support. This is why I want to be of service on the board. As a board member, it is my desire to continue building the Texas Chapter.

I was born in El Paso. My father worked for the United States Postal Service which moved us to California when I was 10. Driving back to El Paso (Home) every Christmas and summer was an adventure and something our family was glad to do. I am the oldest of 2. My sister is a local middle school teacher. My niece (my heart) lives in Washington DC. Dogs, yes we have and love dogs.

Massage, aromatherapy and natural/holistic always interested me. I went to college in Colorado. One day at the shopping center I worked at, I walked into an office not sure what it was. A massage school. Fate. Before I knew it, I enrolled and dropped out of college. My life hasn’t been the same.

I love traveling and working. Doing both fills me.

I look forward to meeting and seeing everyone soon. Thank You for the opportunity to serve.

We are so excited to see our community and education opportunities growing in regions across the state.

There are currently 5 regions holding local meetings and education events.

El Paso (Edge of Texas Region) holds meet and greet meetings each month at different location around El Paso.

A meeting was held on September 17 after a two month meeting hiatus. It was good to see others in the community again. For more information about these meetings, contact Matthew Manriquez (edgeoftexas.amtatx@gmail.com) or check out the calendar on our website.

North Houston Region held their second meeting, this time in Katy. It was a time for practitioners to meet each other with several new members participating. We look forward to more meetings. For more information about these meetings, contact David Falknor (nwhoustonregion.amtatx@gmail.com) or check out the calendar on our website.

The Brownwood region held their first meet and greet on September 30 at Fuzzy’s Tacos in Brownwood. The AMTA Texas Chapter Board President, Brenda Padilla, attended to answer questions about the chapter and to connect with members.  For more information about these meetings, contact Jackye Crumley (brownwoodregion.amtatx@gmail.com) or check out the calendar on our website.

The North Austin region held their second meeting with some new people attending. Their next meeting will be Oct 13 at at La Madeleine at Lakeline and the theme of the meeting will be Sharing Our Knowledge. Bring you questions about clients or techniques and share your knowledge with other practitioners. For more information about these meetings, contact Tamica (northaustinregion.amtatx@gmail.com) or check out the calendar on our website.

We have a new region starting in the Heart of Texas (Waco/Temple/Killeen/Belton/Ft. Hood). They will be holding their first meeting November 2 at JNeely’s Burrito Bar in Belton, Texas. We look forward to watching this community come together and support each other. For more information about these meetings, contact Kacie or Susanne (heartoftexasregion.amtatx@gmail.com) or check out the calendar on our website.

The AMTA National Convention was held in Cleveland, Ohio the end of August and a number of our chapter members were in attendance. We had a great dinner for the Texas members on Friday night and would love some of those who attended to share what classes they took and what they learned at the convention. Also, if any of our members took photos, please share them with Sherry Scott or Michelle Burns.

WE NEED YOUR HELP. We are currently looking for someone to help coordinate meetings and educational events in the Coastal area (Corpus/Rockport/Port Aransas). We will be happy to help you and would love to talk to anyone who has questions. please contact the education chair. There is no commitment required to just talk about the position.

MEET & GREET

AN OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY

AMTA massage therapists have an opportunity to offer massage

at the San Antonio Music Marathon.

Therapist would be providing massage working with the Texas Sports Chiropractors group. The event is Sunday, December 4th. The marathon starts at 7 AM. A covered area in the VIP complex for people to set up and do 10 minute post-event massages. Runners will be coming from all over Texas and the coordinators attempt o match up practitioners for their city with a runner from their city (if you are coming from Houston, they will try to match you with a runner from Houston), so they would love to have therapists from all over Texas. Afterwards, a list of participants is sent to the therapist so you can follow up. You would need to bring a table, business cards, cleaning supplies, a massage lubricant and maybe a small table for a tip jar, etc.

For additional information, please contact David Falknor at nwhoustonregion.amtatx@gmail.com

2022 National Conference First Timers

More than we expected!

Jackie and I (other Jackye) had the opportunity to attend our first national AMTA conference. We are 3 year members and use their insurance and the affordable CE’s. We honestly had no idea what to expect. The conference was in Cleveland which by the way is a cool place. We arrived our first day to pick up our name badges and itineraries, then get ready for the opening session with our national president and the keynote speaker, who just so happened to be Michael Phelps. The session was absolutely wonderful and inspirational.

We then adjourned to await the opening of vendor hall, we were so gobsmacked by the sheer number of vendors. Schools, supplies, and so many other things, such as demonstrations by pioneers of our industry. You were able to be worked on, play with the items that were being offered. Refreshments were readily available at any time.

Right after lunch you had the opportunity to take classes by more instructors who are at the pinnacle of their career and have written books new LMT’s use in school, the amount of courses in various subjects made it hard to choose. Day 2 was more courses and walking back through vendor hall to discover the things you had missed the first day.

We were able to visit with our Texas Chapter the whole time at lunches and dinners and other events coordinated by the Board. Having the chance to meet and interact with peers and make life long friendships was absolutely soul changing. We are already looking forward to the State Conference next year to see our friends.

Delegate Carolyn Speer

What an honor it has been to be elected as a delegate and I am proud to represent our state chapter. I attended the national convention in August, to say the experience was phenomenal is an understatement. I was immediately welcomed with open arms and placed at a table with other fellow delegates where we discussed several topics. Additionally, I learned more about the delegate position and role. What a joy it was to interact and trade pins with other state chapters. The conversations and experience were wholesome and gave me inspiration needed to not only be a delegate but also as a massage therapist.

Carloyn Speer, Delegate

Delegate Michaelle Fisher

I was honored to sit in at the Assembly of Delegates meeting for our delegate, Jackye Crumbly, who was unable to attend. The meeting was energetic with lots of idea exchange. Emphasis was on the job of the delegate during the year as well as at Assembly of Delegates. There were no position statements to vote on this year so it really turned out to be a training for delegates. They are encouraged to be the face of the chapter and a touch point for membership. And especially offer assistance to anyone wanting to create a position statement to be presented at a future Assembly of Delegates.

It was a joy to watch our junior delegate, Carolyn Speer, shine and fit right in with the proceedings. She is going to be such an asset to our Texas Chapter. I can see her representing us at the National level.
