Welcome to the new management team! Brenda Padilla has a ton of experience on the AMTA-Texas board, and a lot of energy to take our chapter forward as president. She’s the best person for the job.

In the past, I’ve always ended up being Treasurer in groups. Spreadsheets and financials are in my wheelhouse. Along with estate management, I’m familiar with fiduciary responsibility: the need to treat large sums of money as if it were my own while also treating it as not mine, if you follow. Like professional ethics, there’s a right way to do things and it’s clear what that is.

Therefore, it’s no accident I ended up being Financial Administrator. I look forward to this new journey as part of our Board.

Hello everyone! I’m Brenda Padilla- your new Texas Chapter AMTA President. I am very fortunate to have served y’all for many years before as Financial Administrator and now as President.

Wow! Time for a fresh start. If you are new to us welcome aboard and if you are seasoned (like me) welcome back. The past 2 years were difficult and it seemed life was put on pause. Well, we are back now and ready to roll. We (the Bodacious Board and our Cheerful Chairmen) at the Chapter have been working hard behind the scenes to get your board complete and ready to work with you for some great education and camaradie – Texas style!

I am so very proud of the El Paso Region for the hard work and dedication they have shown to get West Texas going with AMTA-TX. Now it is time that we all follow their example. My goal for the Texas Chapter is to have CE events all around the state so that where ever you go in Texas, there may be CE event that you can attend all year long. Don’t stop in your area- travel Texas! Come on Beaumont, come on Dallas, come on Amarillo, you too Corpus Christi – let’s get some education your way. If you have an idea for a CE event let us know. We will help you find a location, presenter and set up an event in your area. We need your ideas to make this a success.

If you came to the Texas AMTA Annual State Convention in League City this past March/April – thank you! It was a great success. We had awesome presenters, delicious food, a bodacious board and most important – great swag! Keep reading this newsletter for input from our members and amazing photos. I can’t wait to hear what you would like to have at next year’s convention. Send us your input so we can get to work on it.

In June, our Secretary Veronica Ortega and I will be attending a Planning and Training Meeting in Kansas City. We hope to bring all of our education to better the Texas Chapter. Look for a summary in the next newsletter.

This year the National AMTA Convention will be in Cleveland, Ohio- August 25-27, 2022. Check out the website for more details. If you attend let us know- we will meet for dinner on Friday 26, 2022. Our treat – alcohol not included. I’d like to see many of you there!

Send us your ideas, comments and photos of all the great stuff you do to share with us in the next newsletter. I look forward to a successful year with each of you!

First Timer Report - Stephanie Cook

My first experience at the AMTA conference was a great one! The first morning, I was a bit shy and awkward because I did not know many people there. However, there was always someone at the desk near the classrooms that could answer any of the questions I had. That was a relief since I didn’t know what to do and lifted a lot of the stress off my shoulders.

The board members were always there with snacks and drinks handy to help out. The samples that they offered and the information we were provided offered a look at all the different options that are available out there to use.

The meals that were provided were good food and a good chance to get to know some of the people there. Within the classes, the instructors were intelligent and passionate about teaching what they know. It was hard to choose which classes to take since they were all excellent subjects!

The other people that were there really helped me out with making me feel more comfortable and relaxed, so that I could enjoy learning. The techniques and information that I gained is something that I now use on a daily basis in my practice and I look forward to the next convention!

Convention Report - Veteran Julie Alexander

The 2022 AMTA convention was a great way to reconnect after a very frustrating couple of years dealing with a global pandemic. I was so happy to reconnect with my AMTA friends! I was especially pleased with the instructor that I met, Ruth Bucher. I’ve taken classes from almost every other instructor and was happy to see a new LMTI on the class list. It’s important to me as a tenured LMT that we have new options for classes.

As I work on opening up a new retail store for LMTs in Dallas (Plano), I was pleased to be able to get the feedback of other therapists to make the store exactly what our industry needs. I’m impressed with how AMTA provides great camaraderie amongst all people from new to seasoned LMTs. I’ve been involved with this group for several years and I can’t imagine having a career as an LMT without their support.

It was wonderful to see so many of you in person. We've all missed the hands-on and visiting and networking and hugs. We needed this time together!

League City was as hospitable as ever. The water views and humid breezes made it feel like a tropical vacation.

The first classes started Thursday. Everyone was amazed at the incredible swag bags they received at registration. An actual luggage bag and a couple of years worth of swag! Lunch was brought in from a locally owned restaurant. Thursday night was our annual business meeting and awards night. Election results were announced and new officers were installed.

Awards were presented by Carolyn Scott Naile. During the evening, a slide program put together by Mandy Hatch played.

Memories from many years of Chapter events were greeted with laughter and tears. Old friends were missed and remembered.

Classes continued on Friday and Saturday. Students chose the classes they needed. I heard several stories of less pain and better movement. There were 8 different choices for Continuing Education. All received high praise and therapists felt they were taking home techniques they can use right away.

Friday night was our 60th birthday party. We had delicious Mexican food catered at a charming event locale. There was also a birthday gift for everyone who attended.

When classes ended on Saturday, even though everyone was busy packing up, there was also the feeling of not wanting it to be over. Can't wait to see all ya'll next year!

Education to Enhance Your Practice

The past two years have seen many challenges navigating education opportunities. The past two months have seen education opportunities come to the front again. During COVID I think we all withdrew into ourselves and into online and webinar classes to keep us going.

We are proud to have offered two classes with Ruth Werner by live webinar to help us navigate the new procedures and concerns during the height of the COVID pandemic.

As we moved back into face-to-face encounters. we supported the El Paso region in offering a face to face seminar with Leigh Ankrum which drew people from El Paso, as well as several other locations in Texas and New Mexico. It was so successful, she will be returning to El Paso in June for a seminar on the Pelvic Bowl. Save the dates (June 24-26) and see details below for more information and registration.

And, finally, after a 2 year hiatus, the State convention returned Mar 31-April 2 in League City. We had a wonderful slate of instructors with classes including:

Joe Muscolino Clinical Orthopedic Manual Therapy for Upper Extremity and Neck

James Waslaski Integrated Manual Therapy for Low Back and Kinetic Patterns for Shoulder

Peggy Lamb Stabilizing the Core and SI joint

Dr. Kathleen Stross Current Perspectives on Fascial Fitness

Ruth Bucher Myofascial Therapy

Terry Norman Tuina

Jeni Spring Barefoot Massage

Indira Rubio Muscle Taping

All the instructors raved about the students and loved spending time with our members and the students all loved the classes and want more opportunities to study with the instructors. I encourage you to check them out for other classes these instructors offer.

We want to acknowledge all the attendees as well. Without your participation and support, the event would not have been the success it was. Please watch for information coming in the next couple of months about next years convention in Central Texas.

And, finally, we want to acknowledge and thank Tamica Scott-Tipton for stepping up to set up a regional program in the Austin area. Hopefully, the first meeting will be in June and then monthly after that with quarterly CE events. Please watch for emails coming soon and join Tamica for an opportunity to build community, make connections with resources to support your practice, or find new opportunities to enhance your skills. We can’t do this without YOU.

If you would be interested in helping bring community and education to your area, please contact the Education committee chair who will help you every step of the way. There is very little you have to do and the Education chair and the Board are here to help you make education and community in your area available.

The Respiratory Diaphragm and Pelvic Floor

El Paso AMTA welcomes

Osteopath Leigh Ankrum back to El Paso.

6633 N Mesa Suite 507, El Paso Texas 79912

Last time Leigh was here she taught her incredible class, Intro to Craniosacral Therapy. We are thrilled to have her back teaching how to release respiratory diaphragm tension and connect the pelvic floor to the diaphragm.

This is a 3-day course expanding many concepts that are a paradigm shift in thinking for practitioners. For the price, you can't beat it!

To deepen one's knowledge of the respiratory and pelvic diaphragms is a gateway to understanding more functions of the body. These two diaphragms and their relationship both to each other and the many systems of the body is essential to a greater understanding of how dysfunction works. This might be experienced as low back pain, difficulty breathing, and reduced organ function. By attending this class, you will learn techniques to work each diaphragm individually, as well as together, which creates right relationship between the two. The ultimate outcome is to reduce pain, elevate breathing capacity and have a general sense of wellness through increased organ function.
