The Mass Gathering Ban
& Massage Therapy
As an allied health profession we may practice massage; however, not if we are in a spa setting which is ordered closed.
The situation is a bit confusing.
Let me explain: The Governor's ban on mass gatherings, specifically exempts massage therapists (as an allied health profession). However, the ban also adds day spas to the list of businesses ordered closed.
The press release that accompanies the order says that allied health professions are "not affected" by the ban. (Linked below)
AMTA believes the best way that therapists can contribute to the solution is by only practicing massage that is medically necessary and by supporting the recent federal guidelines as outlined in the 15 Days to Slow the Spread initiative thru at least March 31. (Linked below)
The confusion exists because of the variety of settings in which massage can take place and the various reasons why consumers seek out massage. If we look at the "spirit" of the governor's ban, I conclude massage for general relaxation and wellness is not prudent at this time. However, access to allied health care, including massage, is being preserved for those who need it.
Feel free to contact us if you'd like to discuss your unique situation.

Government Relations
Our Chapter Lobbyist Steve Lyons has been working to advocate for our profession. He has been in contact with the Assistant Deputy Secretary of Health Services and Legislative Council seeking clarity regarding the Governor's ban on mass gatherings.
Mr. Lyons also spoke with Ken Reidy, Senator Baldwin’s Chief of Staff (Washington DC), regarding the small business stimulus efforts. He will continue to advocate for our profession both in Madison and with our state legislators in Washington, DC. We know that the majority of massage therapists in Wisconsin are employed by a small business, work as independent contractors, are self-employed or sole proprietors.
Jeffrey Montoya, our Chapter President, has been in contact with the Small Business Association of Wisconsin to advocate for our profession and gather information for Massage Therapists in small business, sole proprietors and independent contractors. We will make information available to our members as it is released.

Submit a Research Poster
Research Posters are a visual way to present research findings
at a scientific or professional meeting.
Abstract submission deadline is April 15, 2020
The Massage Therapy Foundation (MTF) is pleased to assist the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) with the 23rd annual MTF Poster Session at the 2020 AMTA National Convention in Phoenix, AZ, from August 27-29, 2020.
Posters are an important way for massage therapists and researchers to share their expertise with other members of the profession. MTF encourages participation in this event to create a forum for informal discussion of research, and to provide attendees with the opportunity to learn how research impacts the profession. Foundation Poster Sessions provide a showcase to share massage therapy research with over 1,000 expected convention attendees.
The 2020 MTF Poster Session will include posters from three categories: original research, programmatic evaluation, and clinical case presentations. Posters should include research findings, photographs, charts and diagrams, and be accompanied by an abstract. Share you work and help inform and inspire other massage therapists!
