Florida State University AMWA
Last fall, this chapter joined forces with Relay for Life, the Women's Student Union, and the NAACP to put on the FIRST ever Intersectional Breast Cancer Awareness event. They educated attendees on what breast cancer is, the prevalence, and how to check yourself at home. The event featured a breast cancer survivor sharing her perspective, an advocacy presentation on LGBTQIA+ patients, and discussion on the need for more research.
Amazing job, FSU AMWA!

Help with AMWA's Food Insecurity Advocacy Project!
|
|
Join this interactive advocacy campaign to increase awareness and education about food insecurity, as well as create a cookbook to distribute to food pantries.
We need YOUR HELP to create a low-budget, healthy cookbook representing various recipes that are meaningful to AMWA members. We are collecting recipes and a short story about why the recipe is meaningful to the member who submitted it or if there is a cultural relevance to the recipe.

Membership Scholarship (Need-based fee waiver)
AMWA understands that the cost of joining professional organizations such as AMWA can be a burden when taking into consideration the cost of applying to medical school and other expenses. In an effort to be more inclusive and break down financial barriers, AMWA has created a need-based membership scholarship for students interested in joining AMWA. Recipients of the scholarship will be chosen on a rolling basis based on extenuating circumstances and personal embodiment of AMWA’s goals.

Leader Highlight
Yara Akiel, Region 8 Premedical Director
Yara Akiel is a sophomore majoring in neuroscience with a minor in psychology at the University of Southern California. She is on the premedical track, with an interest in radiology. She loves studying the brain and learning about how such a small organ can be extremely complex and impactful on human function. Yara is very involved in USC's AMWA chapter, and was recently elected to be the Alumni Coordinator. Outside of AMWA, Yara is an admissions ambassador for USC.
AMWA has really helped Yara feel more confident about being a premedical student, and working toward a career as a physician. Having such a supportive community of women through AMWA has given her many opportunities, and eased how overwhelming university can feel. She is super excited to play a bigger role in the organization through leadership, and is ready to support her region as Region 8 Director!
Fun fact: Yara is Lebanese and fluent in Arabic!
