Yemen needs our help. The United Nations has declared that Yemen is facing the most critical humanitarian crisis in the world; moreover, vulnerable populations like women and children are at the highest risk of facing life-threatening health outcomes like severe malnutrition. War conflicts escalated in Yemen in 2015, and the country’s population has been in constant danger since then. Infectious diseases like cholera, the Chikungunya virus, and others are circulating around the country, overwhelming the nation’s healthcare system. More recently, the introduction of COVID-19 to the country is projected to cause higher mortality in the city of Aden than wartime casualties during the entirety of 2015. An overwhelmed healthcare system is no stranger to Yemen, but the recent pandemic has exhausted the country’s resources.

The AMWA Premedical Division and the American Women's Hospitals Service (AWHS) have teamed up to launch a donation-based fundraiser to support Yemen’s fight against COVID-19. We have partnered with Yemen Aid to allocate your generously donated funds. Your donations will provide medical supplies, PPE, and hygiene kits to the Yemeni population.

AMWA is partnering with Drexel University College of Medicine’s Vision 2020 to "Break the Record for Women Voting" in the 2020 elections. With this National Women’s Equality Initiative, it is crucial all voters are given adequate accessibility to exercise their voting rights.

Motivote is a 100% nonpartisan platform that provides guidance and resources in regards to upcoming elections whether it be how to register or any other voting process related topics.

Please join the AMWA member team as well as the AMWA state subteam based on which state you reside in.

As a source of healthy competition, Motivote has a platform for team members to accumulate points for completing tasks related to upcoming elections and inviting friends and family to expand the network of individuals who will vote. AMWA is currently in second place, but we have great faith in our members to get us to first!

The Million Mask Marathon's mission is to provide access to personal protective equipment to those most affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including the poor, homeless, ill, and healthcare workers both in the United States and abroad. We teach members to make masks using whatever they have available, and then we donate the masks to charities and hospitals. During the fall, we will be starting a new collection and hosting virtual mask-making workshops. Check out our website to get involved, sign up for our newsletter, join our Facebook group, and learn more about the initiative!

Leader Highlight
Alexandra Alondra Alvarez
President of Premedical Division
At UC Berkeley, Alexandra Alondra Alvarez completed her degree in Molecular and Cell Biology with an emphasis on Cell and Developmental Biology and a minor in Toxicology. She graduated in May and has been involved in AMWA by being an active member of the Cancer and Women’s Health committee in her branch, being the UC Berkeley AMWA branch Secretary + Public Relations as well as the past National External Relations Chair and National President-Elect.
Alexandra is passionate about women’s health and runs a nonprofit called Generation Flow (previously known as Ladies for Change) that aims to raise awareness on the lack of hygienic menstrual products for women in need everywhere. She also worked in physiology research under Diana Bautista, studying the mechanisms behind touch, pain, and itch and completed her senior thesis. She has really loved seeing AMWA’s mission brought to life through its members and everyone she comes across. She loves seeing how students gain the support and resources they need to pursue their passion and is humbled to serve as the Premedical President for this term.
Aside from AMWA, she is really interested in musical theater and is a huge chai enthusiast. Her advice to young women would be to never give up and not take themselves so seriously: you’re going to define success differently at different points in your career, and it’s okay if what’s good for you may not be good for someone else.
