Planning Blood Drive with NPHC

On August 22nd, the LSU AMWA Premedical Officers met over Zoom to plan a blood drive that brings awareness to blood shortage in the U.S. as well as how it specifically affects African Americans. They will be collaborating with the National Pan-Hellenic Council on this event.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Membership Scholarship (Need-based fee waiver)
AMWA understands that the cost of joining professional organizations such as AMWA can be a burden when taking into consideration the cost of applying to medical school and other expenses. In an effort to be more inclusive and break down financial barriers, AMWA has created a need-based membership scholarship for students interested in joining AMWA. Recipients of the scholarship will be chosen on a rolling basis based on extenuating circumstances and personal embodiment of AMWA’s goals.
The Science Ambassador Scholarship
Open to any high school senior or undergraduate student who is pursuing or planning to pursue STEM programs. Applicants must create a video explaining a STEM topic which they are interested in.

Public Health -- AMWA grieves horrific mass shootings. Learn about the work of our anti-racism committee and gun violence solutions task force. AMWA signs gun prevention letter to the US Senate.
Menstrual Equity. Period - Sewing skills and donations needed for reusable menstrual pad packs for Suriname, in collaboration with the First Lady of Suriname.
Support Paid Family Leave -- Contact your senators.
Support Afghan Aid -- “The need is great – but the power of humanity, even greater.”

Leader Highlight
Dana Shuaibi, Awards Chair

Dana Shuaibi is an undergraduate honors student at UIUC pursuing a degree in Statistics and a minor in Chemistry. She plans to go into the field of Psychiatry. At UIUC, Dana is a member of the AMWA branch, the Outreach Chair of PCRF, and the Co-Founder and Vice President of Positive Pre-Meds, a mental health advocacy club for pre-health students. Dana just concluded a research assistant position in UIUC's Department of Communication where she helped to analyze patient-provider communication among IMG's. Outside of campus she has volunteered at Carle Foundation Hospital in the Pediatric and Cardiopulmonary Departments, spends her summers tutoring through AOC's Homework Helpers Program, and will soon be volunteering at Advocate Christ Medical Center and with Crisis Text Line. Aside from being AMWA's current Awards Chair, Dana is an intern and ambassador for AMWA as well.

"Even though it hasn't been that long, being a part of AMWA has already given me a great opportunity to meet and work with other amazing women who share similar passions, and I look forward to continue doing so!"
