Is the U.S. on track to end the HIV epidemic?
An article by ANAC member Vincent Ramos, PhD, Dean of Duke University School of Nursing was published recently in Lancet. It sheds light on the current status of the U.S. response to the domestic HIV epidemic and the progress toward the 2030 goal of ending the epidemic (EHE). Uneven progress in reducing new HIV infections among some priority populations raises concerns. Strategies that center on reducing HIV related stigma, broadening the HIV workforce, mitigating harmful social determinants of health and recommitting and reinvesting in health in the U.S. more broadly are recommended. Read it here.
PEPFAR reauthorization hangs in the balance
Another recent Lancet article describes how partisan politics are threatening to destabilize/derail the reauthorization of PEPFAR (President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief), a bipartisan supported, lifesaving and life-changing program for millions of people, started by Republican President George. W. Bush that has changed the course of the AIDS pandemic across the globe, given hope to families and girls and stopped the disruption of communities.
Ryan White program anniversary
Aug. 18 marked the 33rd anniversary of the Ryan White program. In 1990, Congress enacted the Ryan White Comprehensive AIDS Resources Emergency (CARE) Act, the legislation that created the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. Today, the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program serves more than a half a million people with diagnosed HIV across the United States. View the program’s timeline here.
