ANAC was a national partner in the U.S. Conference on HIV/AIDS (USCHA), held in Washington, D.C. Sept. 6-9. The theme “A Love Letter to Black Women” highlighted the impact of HIV on Black women and communities and the contributions and leadership of Black women in the HIV response.
We partnered with the Academy of HIV Medicine on a booth, staffed by Nakera Dumas and ANAC members Hazel Jones-Parker and Linda Arthur. ANAC members Jeff Kwong, Alana Bergman and Carole Treston presented a workshop attended by 300 people entitled HIV Treatment Update 2023: What You Need To Know!

The Board of Directors met in D.C. in Sept. to discuss priorities for 2024, review 2023 finances and get updates on programs, membership and committee activities.
Business meeting
Join us at the ANAC annual business meeting on Friday, Oct. 27 from 6 - 7 p.m. CT at ANAC2023. There will be a virtual option and is open to all ANAC members. More information and registration for remote attendance will be sent to all ANAC members prior to the meeting.
PACHA appointment
ANAC Executive Director, Carole Treston, RN, MPH, ACRN, FAAN, was appointed to the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) for a three-year term. Council members provide advice, information and make recommendations to the Secretary of Health and Human Services, Assistant Secretary for Health and to the Director of the White House Office of National AIDS Policy. Carole was installed at the recent PACHA meeting in Charleston, West Virginia, where the focus was Ending the HIV Epidemic in Appalachia, with discussions about addressing HIV in the region and the intersection of substance use disorder and HIV and community-led HIV efforts. Congratulations, Carole!

Malaysia approves first long-acting injectable
The Drug Control Authority (DCA) in Malaysia has approved the first long-acting injectable HIV prevention medication. It is the latest country to endorse use of long-acting cabotegravir after the World Health Organization (WHO) released guidelines in 2022 encouraging countries to employ cabotegravir LA as part of a larger HIV prevention strategy.
Study opportunity
The Global Consortium of Nursing & Midwifery Studies (GCNMS) seeks to foster long-term research collaborations designed to develop research capacity amongst nurses and midwives in low- and middle-income countries. A current GCNMS study examining the long-term effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global nursing and midwifery workforce is seeking country and U.S. state leads. HANCB offers certification as an HIV/AIDS Certified LPN/LVN (ACLPN), HIV/AIDS Certified Registered Nurse (ACRN) or Advanced HIV/AIDS Certified Registered Nurse (AACRN) in collaboration with the National HIV Curriculum 3rd Edition launched on Sept. 1.
Registered learners can earn new NCPD credit even if they have credit from previous editions. The National HIV Curriculum bolsters healthcare professionals’ ability to implement the four key strategies of Ending the HIV Epidemic: diagnose, treat, prevent and respond.

Sex Positivity series
The DEI Committee hosted the second episode of Sex Positivity: Language on Sept. 27. An on-demand viewing will soon be available on the ANAC website. Speakers discussed positive and non-judgmental approaches to sexual health and used case studies to demonstrate how using trauma-informed language can create a safe and supportive environment that promotes healing and recovery.

Board member honored
ANAC board member Crystal Chapman Lambert, PhD, CRNP, FNP-BC, ACRN, FAAN, was awarded the Betty Irene Moore Fellowship for Nurse Leaders and Innovators. It is a national program that recognizes and advances early- to mid-career nursing scholars to accelerate leadership in nursing-science research, practice, education, policy and entrepreneurship. Dr. Lambert’s project, “Enhance social support for Black women with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) using technology” will focus on improving clinical outcomes and health related quality of life among women living with HIV. Congrats Crystal!

ANAC members in new positions
ANAC member Vincent Guilamo-Ramos PhD, MPH, LCSW, RN, ANP-BC, FAAN, was named the Director of the Institute for Policy Solutions at Johns Hopkins School of Nursing. His appointment takes effect Jan. 2, 2024. Dr. Guilamo-Ramos steps down as the Dean of Duke University School of Nursing. ANAC member Michael Relf, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, AACRN, FAAN, Professor of Nursing and Associate Dean for Global and Community Health Initiatives at Duke and JANAC Editor in Chief, will serve as interim dean while the university conducts a national search for Guilamo-Ramos’s successor.
ANAC member wins award
ANAC member Amit "Mickey" Dhir was awarded the F31 Ruth L. Kirschstein Predoctoral Individual National Research Service Award. The purpose of this Kirschstein-NRSA program is to enable promising predoctoral students with potential to develop into productive, independent research scientists and to obtain mentored research training while conducting dissertation research.

2022 Helen Miramontes Advocacy Award
Jason E. Farley, PhD, MPH, ANP-BC, FAAN, FAANP, AACRN, received the Helen Miramontes Advocacy Award in 2022. This award is presented by ANAC and Until There's A Cure Foundation to an ANAC member whose work focuses on improving the lives of vulnerable persons or communities, influences policy at a local, state, national or international level and whose drive, motivations and passion affects change. Dr. Farley is the inaugural Endowed Professor of Nursing Leadership and Innovation at the Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing and a longtime member of ANAC as well as a past president. As a nurse clinician-scientist, his research seeks to streamline prevention and care through strategies to improve access, navigation, linkage, engagement and retention for persons at risk for or living with an infectious disease.
