National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day
Sept. 18
National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day, led by the AIDS Institute, is held Sept. 18 each year and draws focus to the increasing number of people living long, full lives with HIV. More than half of persons with HIV (PWH) in the United States are over age 50. However, people aging with HIV, particularly those diagnosed earlier in the epidemic, are likely to face a myriad of challenges: clinical, psychosocial, financial and logistical. As they age, it’s likely they will enter places of care with providers who are not familiar with HIV and its co-occurring conditions.
As we celebrate this important awareness day, we are excited to share a set of modules we created as part of Gilead's Age Positively initiative to educate healthcare providers about HIV and aging.

These modules were created to educate RNs, APRNs, LPNs, CNAs and other healthcare providers working with aging PWH. They provide a standardized body of knowledge and aim to improve the quality of care for people living, aging and thriving with HIV.

Providers may work in areas like:
  • Nursing homes/rehabilitation facilities
  • Hospitals
  • Community clinics
  • Private doctor offices

The free, on-demand courses include:
  • Beginner and advanced topics
  • Clinical and compassionate care content from clinicians and persons living and aging with HIV
  • Topic clusters broken into short, individual sections
  • Up to 6.25 NCPD (CNE) contact hours

The first four modules are ready for you to view! They cover foundations of HIV diagnosis & treatment, chronic co-occurring conditions, HIV and brain health and cognition, and creating inclusive spaces for people with HIV. Additional modules will be released in the coming months covering quality of life and cardiovascular health.
