[more info on D.D.]
. The program proposes a truly
global jazz
perspective, moving beyond the traditional bebop and neo-traditional focus toward a more
inclusive
definition that embraces the exciting variety of
world music
and
other conceptual influences
we believe
essential
to the aspiring jazz musician in today’s age.
The program
[application deadline

is
Nov. 15th/18, with
auditions held on
Dec. 18th/18]
is open to applicants who have completed an appropriate BA in Music (or equivalent), who must then pass an
audition which demonstrates not only their proficiency on their instrument/voice but also their
musical conceptual outlook

original composition
or re-working of an existing composition)
[audition requirements here]
.
Degree requirements
include a focus on
private lessons
in which students are encouraged to take this
broader
, more
holistic
approach to jazz (and
composition
), paired with participation potentially both in
small ensemble
, and also in the
Brooklyn College Big Band
(directed by Prof. D.D. Jackson and showcasing
original student work
s, Prof. Jackson’s own compositions, new re-workings of classical repertoire - all with a decidedly
open-minded
focus). Additional opportunities are also available to participate in a
Global Music Ensemble
focused on the
music of other cultures
, to study
Global Improvisation
, to research
Music of the World’s Peoples
, as well as to incorporate a more
global perspective
even with such “traditional” courses as
Jazz Composition
,
Arranging and Orchestration
, and
History of Jazz

Music Business & Marketing
, to
Jazz Pedagogy
, to varying
Seminars in Jazz History
. The program culminates in a
Masters Recital
(or
Masters Thesis)
, reflecting the experiences and
new conceptual discoveries
the students have gained from their participation in the program.
