Olive oil producers want Australian consumers to learn more about the many flavours of olive oil.

Industry experts believe many consumers are missing out by not knowing what they should be experiencing in high-quality olive oil.

Strategies such as olive oil tasting experiences and chef training are being implemented to help bridge the gap.

A great story featuring insight from AOA Chief Executive Officer Michael Southan and of course, Trudie Michels. Many of you would recognise Trudie as The Australian International Olive Awards Competition Convenor and Chief Steward - she certainly knows her stuff!

Fruit fly outbreak, South Australia

Image: Queensland fruit fly (Bactrocera tryoni, Qfly). PIRSA.

Restrictions are now in place across parts of South Australia, as local authorities continue to manage fruit fly outbreaks affecting the state.

Check the fruit fly outbreak map to see if your area is affected, so you can understand the restrictions that apply. Industry and market access arrangements may be applicable if you are a commercial grower.

To find out more about fruit fly outbreaks, share feedback, or report suspected fruit fly or larvae, please visit fruitfly.sa.gov.au or call our Fruit Fly Hotline on 1300 666 010.

Australian growers – showcase your oil at Food Service Australia with the Olive Wellness Institute!

The Olive Wellness Institute will be taking part in a masterclass event at Foodservice Expo in Melbourne in May.

The masterclass will include extra virgin olive oil tasting and an EVOO cooking demonstration with a well-regarded chef.

As part of the expo, a selection Australian extra virgin olive oils will also be on display, so attendees can see the wide variety of high-quality oils on offer. There is also an opportunity to provide EVOO for chefs to use during cooking demonstrations throughout the event.

If you are interested in showcasing your oil at the event, please contact the Olive Wellness Institute via info@olivewellnessinstitute.org for more information.

Please note that since this is for the Olive Wellness Institute, the opportunity is only relevant for Australian growers.

You can read more about Olive Wellness Institute on their website.

Integrated solutions for accessing soil moisture

Many Australian crops are not reaching the potential yields for the rainfall they receive because the soils in which they grow have physical and chemical constraints, usually in the subsoil, that are limiting root growth. This limits a plant’s access to water and nutrients.

This reduction in yield represents major opportunity losses for growers.

Sustainability remains the focus for Australian agritech investment

Australia's growing agritech sector is building momentum, with over 550 agrifood tech

businesses driving innovation. In 2023, 87% of

agrifood tech funding focused on sustainability solutions, reflecting the industry's growing

commitment to tackling global challenges.

Could a tropical cyclone hit Sydney? What climate change science does — and doesn't — say about future storms

Tropical Cyclone Alfred was no normal cyclone.

Firstly, it moved the wrong way. Most cyclones that form in the Coral Sea move east then out to sea by the time they get as far south as Brisbane. This one began on that trajectory, then turned around.

An interesting read about how cyclones may impact different parts of Australia in future.
