Happy New Year 2017!

All the AOLS staff, including Barkley (pictured above) would like to wish our members a very Happy New Year 2017!

This is going to be an exciting year for AOLS with the historic National Surveyors' Conference coming up, the Great Lengths book being published, and a variety of educational and networking events taking place.

We look forward to seeing you and hearing from you this year!

AGM 2017 - National Surveyors' Conference

We are pleased to note that a link to the National Surveyors' Conference 2017 has been added to the Ottawa Tourism website under "Conferences": www.ottawatourism.ca/conferences/national-surveyors-conference-2017

As you are planning your visit to Ottawa for the conference, it might be a good idea to check out the Ottawa Tourism website for information on attractions, events, shopping, dining and more - www.ottawatourism.ca

Online registration for the conference is open:

Prices will go up by 10% on February 12!

We have a very exciting program planned!

Remember that a Meet and Greet will take place the evening of Tuesday, February 28th and the AOLS Business Meeting will be on the morning of Friday, March 3rd.

Please don't delay booking your hotel, as  if you do not book a room by the "cutoff date" in the  attached chart, you may not be able to get a room at a reasonable rate. There are many celebrations for 2017 in Ottawa and those celebrations seem to be driving hotel room rates up to exorbitant rates outside of our room blocks.

We look forward to seeing you in Ottawa!

Survey Equipment Seminars: Belleville and Toronto
by Julia Savitch, Program Manager

The "Survey Equipment Theory, Use, Maintenance and Adjustment (TUMA)" seminars are coming up in Belleville and Toronto.  The deadline for seminar registration at either location is Friday, January 20, 2017.

Most of Ontario Land Surveyors have just started year 2 of the AOLS 3-year mandatory Continuing Professional Development cycle. The AOLS Continuing Education Committee is committed to providing surveyors with professional development opportunities. The best method of fulfilling the professional development requirements is to obtain 1/3 of the total requirement each year.

The AOLS urges participants to register for this seminar as soon as possible. During January and February 2017, AOLS staff will be heavily involved with the planning and organization of the 2017 Annual General Meeting in Ottawa.

Fanshawe College Co-op Students 2017
Civil Engineering/Construction Engineering
by Tom Nesbitt, Co-op Consultant, Fanshawe College

Happy New Year Everyone.

I look after the Co-op students for the Civil Engineering Technology and the Construction Engineering Technology (Management) programs for Fanshawe College.

I am now starting to contact employers for the upcoming co-op year. I would like to thank those who have already contacted me and would like to encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity to recruit students who are committed to being very productive workers in your company.

First year students from both programs will be available for a 4 month paid work term from end of April to September and 2nd year students go out for 8 month paid work terms from end of April to December.

If you are interested in posting a Co-op opportunity for these students, please fill in the attached Co-op Employer Job Posting Form. You can either email or fax the posting back to me and we will post your job opportunity to all eligible students.

If you have your own job posting already completed, you can send that to me and I can use that also.

The Co-op Job Site opens to all eligible students to start applying on January 17, 2017.

Generally, we will keep the posting up for 5-10 days. After the deadline, we will send all the applicants to you and you can select any candidates you like and interview at your convenience, either here at the College or at your place of business. I can set up any interviews for you as well.

I post Employer Job Opportunities to students from January to May each year.

Please note that there is a Co-op Tax Credit initiative for all Ontario private sector employers that will pay up to a maximum of $3,000 for hiring a co-operative education student for each 4 month work term to qualifying employers.

Thanks again for considering our Civil Engineering Technology and Construction Engineering Technology Co-operative Education programs. We greatly value your commitment in helping prepare our students for their future careers.
