13th Annual Hockey Game at the AGM!
submitted by Pat Hills
It was a clear, cold day in Huntsville at the AOLS AGM in February, 2005. The sun was setting and someone said, "Hey, who brought their hockey gear?" Ten intrepid surveyors strapped on the skates and took part in the first annual hockey game at the AGM. Many people have taken credit for asking that question. I thought it was me. But then again, Ted Williams makes a good case. Just try and tell that to Tom Czerwinski - when Ron Berg is present! Regardless, the hockey game has become a tradition... like no other.
This year will be special. I have arranged for commemorative hockey jerseys to be made, which the participants will be able to keep after the game. Leftover jerseys will be auctioned off to benefit the educational foundations of our three associations. We will be taking orders for additional jerseys at the registration desk. The cost will be roughly $100 per jersey. Because of the nature of the event, this year I am asking that participants express their interest to play ahead of time. You can contact me directly to secure your spot: [email protected]
This year's game will be played at the Richcraft Sensplex Rink at 813 Shefford Road from 6:45 to 7:45 on Thursday, March 2. I will arrange for a bus to take everyone over between 6:00 and 6:15. We ask that in the very least, all players wear helmets. For those of you who haven't played with us before, most of us wear full gear for this game. We will have two goalies. You won't want to miss the opportunity to hear Julia Meldrum scream, then giggle, when you score on her - or when she makes a save. Her reaction is the same.
Format will be as always. I will randomly throw a home or away jersey at you in the dressing room to choose teams. We very much look forward to our counterparts from Quebec and ACLS joining us this year, and in the spirit of the occasion, the teams will be a mix of all the conference participants.
I look forward to seeing everyone in March. Remember to let me know if you plan on attending!

6th Annual Geomatics Career Fair Hosted by the Geomatics Club @ York
by Maureen Mountjoy, Deputy Registrar
|
The 6th Annual Geomatics Career Fair, which was organized by students from the Geomatics Club of York University, was held at the Bergeron Centre at York University on February 3rd. I was invited to give a presentation about our association and the steps to becoming an Ontario Land Surveyor during the morning session. Throughout the rest of the day, Bob Pearson, OLS and I staffed an AOLS exhibit.
Many students visited our booth to ask questions about the profession, and particularly, about employment opportunities, both summer and full time. We recommended that they regularly check the
Employment Opportunities
in the
Classified
section on the AOLS website and also post their resumes in the
Employment Wanted
and
Summer Student
section as well.
A large contingent of undergraduate students from the Geomatics Club will be attending the AGM. If you can, please take a moment to talk to the students and perhaps share some of your career experiences with them.
See you in Ottawa!
