This year's Science Rendezvous has begun! From May 4 to 22, virtual, hybrid, and in-person events will take place across Canada.
Science Rendezvous pulls science, technology, engineering, art, and math (STEAM) research and innovation out of the lab and onto the street. Stage shows, robotics, virtual reality, INVENTours, large-scale experiments and demonstrations, science buskers, and Science Chase races are designed to delight and excite the young and the young at heart.
On Saturday, May 7, Ontario land surveyors and articling surveyors from local firms Hopkins Chitty Land Surveyors, MTO, and Paul Miller Surveying will be on hand to speak with students, parents, and grandparents at the AOLS booth.
NDMNRF, Surveyors on Site (Windsor), and Rudy Mak Surveying Ltd. (Barrie) also contributed to the virtual exhibits, while AOLS and Rudy Mak Surveying Ltd. donated $2,000 as sponsors.
Once again, GeePs and Geo, the AOLS characters who promote "Get Kids into Survey," will be at Science Rendezvous in Kingston.
A 2022 update to the Ontario Traffic Manual (OTM) Book 7 – Temporary Conditions Office and Field Editions is complete. The office edition is now live and available for use on the MTO Library at bit.ly/37X3X5M.
This updated manual is for immediate use and replaces the version that was last published in 2014. The updated manual has been substantially reformatted to be more user-friendly and includes new layouts to address roundabouts, pedestrians, and cycling facilities, and also reflects requirements for the regular posted speed of 110km/h and the recent new regulation for Automated Flagger Assistance Devices (AFADs).
There is also a new layout table to help users determine the most appropriate protection measure to use within their traffic management plan.
The manual will soon be available on the Ministry’s Tech Pubs website and for purchase from Publications Ontario at www.publications.gov.on.ca.
The updated book is not yet available in hard copy, but it is anticipated that hard copies of both the Office and Field editions will be available for purchase in the next few weeks.
Welcome to our New Surveyors
Jennifer Humber OLS# 2125
Jake Anderson OLS# 2126
Jennifer Humber graduated from the College of the North Atlantic in 2005 with a Diploma in Geomatics Engineering (Co-op). Upon graduating, she began working in the offshore industry and eventually moved into the construction industry in Alberta.
In 2009, Jennifer began working as a Crown Surveyor Inspector with the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador, Crown Lands Division. During this time, Jennifer became interested in cadastral surveying and decided to work toward a Newfoundland Land Surveyors licence (NLS). While working, Jennifer began completing the required courses to meet the academic requirements to obtain her Canadian Board of Examiners for Professional Surveyors (CBEPS) certification. In 2015, Jennifer obtained her CBEPS certificate and in 2014 she began her articleship with Wayne Hodder Surveys in Gander, NL. After fulfilling the experience and academic requirements, Jennifer successfully completed the NLS professional exam and was sworn in as a Newfoundland Land Surveyor on April 11, 2019.
In 2021, Jennifer became interested in pursuing a career as an Ontario Land Surveyor (OLS) and began the process of obtaining her OLS though labour mobility. In April 2022, Jennifer successfully completed the AIT exam, and was sworn in as an Ontario Land Surveyor on April 13, 2022.
Jennifer would like to thank her spouse Corey for his immense support and encouragement over the years and to her parents for their confidence and teaching her to never give up on her goals. She would like to express her sincere gratitude to all the surveyors, both NLS and OLS, for their advice, guidance, and support in helping her obtain her Newfoundland Land Surveyor and her Ontario Land Surveyor licences.
Jake Anderson grew up in Ottawa and graduated from Carleton University with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering in 2016. Throughout the course of his studies, he worked with Annis O’Sullivan Vollebekk Ltd. out of their Nepean office as a member of a field crew to make the most of short Ontario summers.
Throughout these summers with AOV, he was quickly convinced by Andy Shelp that “there is much more to land surveying than being the person who blocks the sidewalk and walks around with a stick.” Jake’s interest in the field of land surveying grew quickly and he began his articles in July of 2019. He was sworn in as an Ontario Land Surveyor on April 26, 2022.
Jake would like to thank his family, as well as Ed Herweyer, Andy Shelp, Andrew Broxham, and Travis Hartwick for their constant support and guidance throughout the articling process and getting him to where he is today.
