AORA June 2023 Newsletter

From the National Executive Officer

The 2023 AORA National Conference was a great success with extremely positive feedback received from members, sponsors and speakers.

Of course, a successful event like the AORA National Conference does not happen without a great deal of collaboration, commitment and effort from a wide range of people and AORA acknowledges with appreciation the work of the 2023 Conference Organising Committee and our conference event organisers, rEvolve Services.

Gratitude to all of AORA partners and sponsors who also make a significant investment in money, time, people and other resources to make the event possible – thank you.

With over three-hundred conference registrations, this was AORA’s biggest conference to-date and is a clear indicator that the Australian organics recycling industry is considered pivotal to a successful circular economy.

Organics recycling is important for many reasons. Organics comprise about half of our national waste stream. If Australia “gets organics recycling right”, we have a good chance of meeting our national and state objectives for waste reduction and recycling, landfill reduction, and carbon reduction. If we do not get it right, we will not achieve those targets and arguably the circular economy is unachievable at the level it must reach to be considered a success.

There is a lot at stake and AORA is pleased to play an active role in being part of the solution.

SA Exploring Organic Amendments Event

On Friday 16 June, in beautiful Coonawarra, we held our Exploring Organic Amendements event - this was attended by a good mix of compost producers, viticulturists, farmers and horticulturists from SA's South East Region and from across the border in Western Victoria.

Dr Mel Fraser, Soil Function Consulting lead the session, followed by Tim Marshall, TM Organics and NASAA Organic Chair who tailored his section to specifically address the concerns and questions attendees had which resulted in a highly informative session for all attendees.

The day finished with a site visit to Penley Estate to discuss soil macrofauna diversity sampling and Penley’s experience with compost and their future plan for native seeding, with Ehsan Sayad from Landscape SA Limestone Coast and Hans Loder, viticulturist at Penley Estate.

This event was presented in conjunction with National Association for Sustainable Agriculture Australias and proudly supported by Limestone Coast Landscape Board, Green Industries SA, Chase Finance and Bio Gro.

WA's Better Bins Plus: Go FOGO program is now open year-round

From 1 July, Western Australian councils will be able to apply for more funding to support the rollout of Food Organics Garden Organics. The State Government has strengthened its commitment to local governments by increasing the rates available from next month by up to $10 per household, to $15 or $25 per household. This will help councils transitioning to or improve the three-bin service until the funding program concludes in 2026.
