APG had a significant week of meetings in Washington, DC, advocating for the importance of a Farm Bill focusing on the Market Access Program (MAP), Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP) and Navel Orangeworm (NOW). We met with USDA/APHIS, USDA FAS to discuss trade opportunities and the importance of trade to the American pistachio industry.

APG is currently working on eliminating the sales tax on exported pistachios to Mexico. APG had the pleasure of meeting with Luis Martinez with the Mexican Embassy to gain support in building a coalition in favor of eliminating the snack tax on pistachios in Mexico.

The Nation needs a Farm Bill now, not later. Our growers need these new tools now, and the next best window to pass the Farm Bill in 2024 is during Congress's lame-duck session. It's a fact that nine in ten Americans do not consume enough fruits and vegetables in their daily diets. This trend needs to be reversed, and the Farm Bill, with its support for specialty crop growers, is a crucial tool in this battle for healthier eating habits.

  APG's Farm Bill Priorities

  • More research to help growers innovate and compete.
  • Additional investment in the Specialty Crop Block Grant program.
  • An enhanced safety net.
  • Tools to reach new markets across our borders.
  • Procurement reform and other measures to ensure Americans have access to nutritious foods.

REFLECTING ON "CULTIVATING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE" RECHARGE EVENT

It's clear that the day was not just about discussing water management but truly about gearing up for it, as well as other challenges. Held at the Tulare Ag Expo in partnership with Sustainable Conservation, the event was packed with practical insights specifically tailored for our farming community. Each talk was delivered with a grower's day-to-day challenges in mind, focusing on how to practically apply the knowledge shared.

The "On-farm Recharge Preparation" segment was designed with a chronological flow of processes in mind: gathering specific GSA information, making cultural preparations, planning amendments and water infiltration enhancements, then where to put the water and how much.

The day started with a dive into the cutting-edge tools we've developed with Project Mizu. Thanks to our collaboration, we're now able to bring crucial data like water allocations, salinity levels, and potential recharge credits right to your fingertips—no need to step into a GSA office. This tool is all about making your life easier, letting you access vital information directly and efficiently.

Ismael Patron from Maricopa Orchards then took us through a real-world checklist of what needs to be done in your orchards before you can even think about letting water seep back into the ground. From managing weeds to making sure your trees are pruned and brush shredded, his talk was all about getting the groundwork right.

Mae Culumber of UC Cooperative Extension built on that foundation by discussing how to tailor soil amendments for better water infiltration and salinity management during recharge. Following Mae, Patrick Brown from UC Davis showed us how precise we need to be with these amendments, ensuring they're applied just where they'll do the most good.

Louise Ferguson from UC Davis took it a step further, showing us how to pick the best fields for recharge and calculate exactly how much water to use to manage salinity effectively. Then, Charlie Chen talked about the power of cover crops to improve water infiltration and boost soil health, which is key to successful recharge.

Tobias Ebong Oker of UC Cooperative extension introduced us to the innovative use of nanobubbles in water, a new way to enhance soil infiltration that could be a game changer for many of us.

The segment wrapped up with an APG grower panel, where fellow farmers shared their firsthand experiences with on-farm recharge—how-to's, the good, the bad, and the practical takeaways, as well as a keynote talk from Don Cameron and a SGMA panel discussing the nuances and ramifications of the regulatory program across several GSAs and irrigation districts.

On top of a half-day of sustainable water management education, we provided important and deliverable updates on relevant industry issues such and Navel Orangeworm, Carpophillus Beetle, maximum residue levels of pesticides, and sustainability talks on sheep grazing, biopesticide research and a novel approach to soil acidifcation. This wasn't just another day of academic droning; it was a day designed by growers for growers, showing APG's commitment to providing real, actionable advice that you can use on your farms right away.

This event was a clear indication that at APG is actively working to deliver the tools and knowledge you need to achieve it. As we look ahead, we are committed to providing our growers with the necessary resources and support to secure a sustainable and profitable future in the ever-evolving landscape of agriculture.

Thank you to all of those who attended and look forward to seeing you at the next!
