A top US Navy acquisitions official said, "Anyone who steps aboard our ships must be ever vigilant about ensuring fire safety. I urge you to use the recent fire to ensure that our work spaces are clean, that unnecessary clutter is removed, that all fire safety measures are being followed and that there is unrestricted access to firefighting and damage control equipment." Excellent, you may think. Regardless of the reason for the fire itself, a reason that the fire became uncontrolled ... was because its fire suppression system had been shutdown and its compartment doors left open. For maintenance.

What Happens to a Plane in an Aircraft Boneyard
When an aircraft is scrapped, there's still plenty of parts that can live again. Photo: Ricardo de Vries

Fancy a Fender Stratocaster guitar made from Boeing 747 parts? Or maybe an aircraft window, buffed, polished and mounted on a base, so you can gaze through it at sky and clouds and reminisce about the flying experience? Or how about an ejector seat from an F4 Phantom fighter-bomber, used extensively by US forces in the Vietnam War. Just don't touch the red button. Head for Boeing Store and you can choose from a treasure trove of artifacts culled from aircraft that have passed their use-by date.

Aircraft pass into retirement for any number of reasons but generally, a commercial airliner will reach its end-of life at a maximum of about 25 years. The last time that aircraft takes to the air its final destination will probably be a decommissioning facility, an aircraft boneyard.

battery_storage6 Steps to Improve Community Safety Near Li-Ion Energy Storage Systems
APS
9/28/20

By Steve Kerber
Utility Dive

As the lithium-ion battery energy storage system (ESS) industry grows and demand for renewable energy increases, ESS facilities will likely continue to proliferate in communities and urban areas around the world, providing multiple benefits, along with some risks.

"Lithium-ion batteries have flammable chemical electrolytes and are susceptible to thermal runaway if the battery has faults, contaminants or experiences physical or operational stress," said Ken Boyce, principal engineer director, UL Energy and Power Technologies division. "Additionally, lithium-ion batteries can spontaneously reignite hours or even days later after a fire event if cells go into thermal runaway, making decommissioning, deconstructing and storing more complicated. Adding to that complexity, safety requirements for ESS sites are still evolving as more information about the technology becomes available," he said.
