US Department of Transportation issues Notice of Funding Opportunity

The U.S. Department of Transportation has published the Notice of Funding Opportunity (NOFO) for the 2021 Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) Discretionary Grant Program (former BUILD). Details are provided below.

The application deadline is July 12.

WSP Acquires b+p, Increasing its strategic advisory services expertise and presence in Switzerland

April 21, 2021 — WSP Global Inc. (TSX: WSP) (“WSP” or the “Corporation”) is pleased to announce that it has acquired b+p baurealisation (“b+p”), a 100-employee engineering and consulting firm. Based in Zurich, Switzerland, with additional offices across the country, b+p offers primarily project & construction management and cost management services to both public and private sector clients. The acquisition of b+p was financed using WSP’s available cash and credit facilities.

Port of San Diego’s proposed wetland mitigation bank in the South Bay advances to California Coastal Commission

April 19, 2021 —  The Port of San Diego’s proposed wetland mitigation bank project in the South Bay marks a major milestone with two approvals needed to advance the project to the California Coastal Commission for consideration. The project, the first of its kind for San Diego Bay, would create a 76.5-acre coastal wetland mitigation bank on the southern portion of a Port-owned parcel known as Pond 20, a former salt evaporation pond that is currently vacant, isolated from tidal influence, and provides little habitat value due to its salt-encrusted surface and invasive plants.

Albion Marine Solutions develops innovative Advanced Air Emissions Abatement technology

April 7, 2021 — With the support of Transport Canada, Albion Marine Solutions has completed the development of an innovative Advanced Air Emissions Abatement Technology The third phase was finalized successfully by the concept design of the technology. This adaptable technology solution intends to reduce the actual air emissions across Canadian ports.

Taipei Port set to step up as Smart Car Logistics Port

April 19, 2021 — Taipei Port, northern Taiwan’s largest international commercial port, has a significant amount of land available for commercial development and use. Responding to the government’s call to promote smart transportation applications in the 2020 Transportation White Paper, port officials have designated wharves and warehouse facilities in Taipei Port’s South Port District for future public lease. A public invitation to bid on “South Port District Wharf Nos. S04 & S05 and Land in Reclamation District C” was issued by Taipei Port in early March (2021). The wharves and land are within the port’s smart vehicle industry zone, and priority consideration will be given to bidders interested to develop smart-vehicle-related value-added production and transshipment operations. Companies in this sector are encouraged to invest and do business at Taipei Port.

Taiwan, US discuss aid for Pacific island nations

April 18, 2021 (Taipei Times) — Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Tien Chung-kwang (田中光) on Friday met with US Deputy Assistant Secretary for Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands Sandra Oudkirk in an online meeting promoting partnership among Pacific island nations, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said yesterday.

The meeting, hosted by the Washington-based Heritage Foundation, revolved around how the US and Taiwan can assist Pacific island countries in their sustainable development and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic, the ministry said in a news release.

Liebherr Sycratronic tandem lifting system a trailblazer for the wind industry

April 15, 2021 — The Liebherr Sycratronic tandem lifting system proves its effectiveness in the onshore and offshore wind industry for long and heavy components. Nantes Saint-Nazaire Port updated its mobile harbour crane fleet and also opted for the Sycratronic assistance system. The new cranes of Nantes Saint-Nazaire Port will handle wind turbines for the offshore wind farm “Parc du Banc de Guérande” – located 12 km off French coast

The Liebherr Sycratronic tandem lifting system is used in the growing onshore and offshore wind industry. Liebherr mobile harbour cranes equipped with Sycratronic are increasingly being used for long and heavy components such as rotor blades or turbines. Nantes Saint-Nazaire Port has also recently started using two new LHM 550 and LHM 600 mobile harbour cranes. Both machines are equipped with Sycratronic and will handle parts for an offshore wind farm under construction off the French coast.

Position adjustment of senior executives of Taiwan Port Corporation

April 14, 2021 — In order to meet the business needs and enhance the experience of the executives of the management level, the Taiwan Port Corporation adjusted the senior executives on April 14, 110 as follows:

  1. Administrative Deputy General Manager Wang Paifeng was transferred to Deputy General Manager and concurrently General Manager of Hualien Port Branch.
  2. Assistant deputy general manager Wang Jinrong was promoted to deputy general manager of engineering and acted as deputy general manager of administration.

IMO Secretary-General appoints Maryanne Adams to WMU Board of Governors

April 12, 2021 — The World Maritime University (WMU) is pleased to announce that Maryanne Adams, Deputy Commissioner of Maritime Affairs for the Republic of the Marshall Islands, has been appointed by the IMO Secretary-General, Mr Kitack Lim, to join the WMU Board of Governors.

Ms Adams commenced working with the Permanent Representative of the Republic of the Marshall Islands to the International Maritime Organization in 2012. She started her career as a seafarer and qualified as a Master Mariner. Regarding her appointment to the WMU Board of Governors, Ms Adams said, “I am delighted to be a member of WMU Board of Governors, education is the foundation of the maritime industry and it is my pleasure to assist.”

Port of Long Beach reaches busiest month on record

April 8, 2021 — The Port of Long Beach achieved its busiest month and its second-best quarter on record as consumers continued to practice physical distancing guidelines in March and turned their computers into virtual shopping malls.

Although March is traditionally one of the slowest months on the shipping calendar, dockworkers and terminal operators moved 840,387 twenty-foot equivalent units last month, a 62.3% jump from March 2020 and marking the largest year-over-year increase for a single month at the Port.

Lynker Promotes Dr. Chris Hawkins as new VP of Marine, Ocean and Coastal Sciences and Information (MOCSI) Group – West

April 7, 2021 — Chris Hawkins is newly promoted to lead the Marine, Ocean & Coastal Sciences and Information Group West (MOCSI West). Chris most recently served as the Executive Director of Lynker’s Sustainable Pacific Program, where he helped establish a tremendous number of partnerships with non-profits and other capacity-challenged organizations to promote sustainable coastal and marine resources. In his new role, Chris will lead MOCSI’s efforts on the West Coast, Alaska and the U.S. Pacific Islands. Lynker has a broad environmental science, management, and technology portfolio supporting the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, other federal and state agencies, and various industry and non-profit partners. Chris has worked in the U.S. Pacific Islands since 2002 and is honored to continue to serve these needs of our coastal communities and Lynker’s great employees.
