APP's Annual Conference Update
October 24 to 27, 2021
San Diego (Intercontinental Hotel)
|
|
Spotlight on speakers...
We've developed an impressive list of speakers for this year's APP Annual Conference. As leaders in their respective fields of expertise, topics cover issues of key importance for all aspects of a port's organization -- governance, management, and operations. Over the coming weeks, we'll be profiling our speakers and their presentations to highlight what you'll miss if you don't register!
|
|
Gus Hein, Gateway Director, Mid-Pacific Region,
U.S. Maritime Administration
As our first speaker on the first day of sessions, Mr. Hein provides important context and sets the stage for all sessions to follow. In addition to providing an overview and update of MARAD activities for the Mid-Pacific Region (California, Hawaii, Arizona, Nevada, and Utah, as well as the U.S. territories of Guam, American Samoa, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands), he'll be presenting a report from colleague Bruce Lambert, Gateway Director, Pacific Northwest & Alaska.
Topics will include insights into activities aimed to bolster resiliency and recovery as well as MARAD's active support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Homeland Security.
Given his responsibilities include promoting economic growth, mitigating port and highway congestion, environmental compliance; support shipbuilding; and emergency response, Mr. Hein's presentation is a can't-miss event Commissioners, Port Managers, and Operations Staff!
|
|
Don Krusel, Strategic Advisor, Port Governance
As a 35-year veteran of the Canadian port and transportation industry, Mr. Krusel has witnessed and played a leading role in many of the transformative changes that have taken place in trade logistics, including his tenure as President and CEO of the Prince Rupert Port Authority where he was credited with being the architect behind the creation of a new and innovative intermodal trade corridor between Asian and North American markets. He is now on the east coast, working on a similar project with the Port of Quebec that promises to innovate the St. Lawrence logistics chain with the development of a new deep-water container terminal there.
Mr. Krusel's topic for the APP Conference looks at "Strategic Planning vs Business Planning" and will provide guidance for Port Commissioners and Managers who want to avoid the blurred and repetitive exercise of completing "The Plan". While a good “business plan” can support a good organization; a truly great and successful organization stays focused on a bold and courageous “strategy”.

Port of Redwood City reports fiscal year 2020-21 numbers
August 19, 2021 — The Port of Redwood City announced that the fiscal year closed positively with $9 million in gross revenue. Property rental, leases and new business lifted the Port’s gross revenue and contributed to an increase of 3% or $270,000, compared to the previous fiscal year of $8.7 million.
The Port’s total cargo tonnage decreased to 1.8 million metric tons, which was a 291,000 MT reduction from the prior fiscal year’s tonnage. This was due to impacts associated with the continued COVID-19 pandemic, but Port officials are optimistic about the upcoming fiscal year. Port tenants and their operations have weathered the pandemic and all indicators within the global supply chain remain strong for both the construction industry and well as the recycling needs of the Silicon Valley region.

Coastal Trident 2021 demonstrates collaborative success
August 5, 2021 — Poseidon, known as the ruler of the sea, is oftentimes depicted as carrying a three-pronged spear, known as a trident, for protection. It is fitting that the operational research program created to counter threats to port and maritime security and sustain the global operations of naval forces is named the Coastal Trident.
The program was established 15 years ago to support the Port of Hueneme and local response organizations in addressing the complex nature of threats to port and maritime security. Since then, Coastal Trident has grown in scope and influence and now regularly involves the participation of more than 150 federal, state, local government, academic, and private sector organizations.
