Agenda almost 100% confirmed

We're almost there! Panels, speakers and special presentations are just about fully confirmed. And what an agenda! With the main theme being ONE OCEAN -- SHARED VISION, we've organized mornings and afternoons into themes that highlight the critical connections between ports and other sectors of the maritime industry.

Here's just a sample of this year's agenda:

Ports & Ships:

  • Developing a Vibrant Cruise Industry: Focusing on what it takes to build a successful cruise industry, Donna Spalding, Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), is joined by representatives from top cruise destinations to discuss trends and issues as well as their own experiences in developing their sector.
  • Commercial Shipping on the West Coast: Moderated by Jamie Marshall, National Sector Lead – Ports and Marine, Colliers Project Leaders, two of the leading marine-policy advocacy organizations on the West Coast of North America join together to highlight commonalities, differences, issues and opportunities for the interface between port, marine terminals and shippers.
  • Electrification and Shore Power for the Ferry Industry: Mike Corrigan, CEO of Interferry and Vice-Chairman for the Port of Vancouver, describes the trends and new technologies related to electrification and onshore power development as well as other sustainability practices — all playing a role in ports’ efforts to reach zero emissions.

Ports & Partners:

  • Oil Spill Response -- Ready Today, Prepared for Tomorrow: As Canada’s West Coast marine response organization for almost 50 years, Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (originally known as Burrard Clean Operations) is internationally renowned for their knowledge and expertise in spill response strategies. Senior Communications Manager Michael Lowry describes the growth of the organization and the plans in place for prevention, preparedness and response to cover both sides of the 49th Parallel.
  • Emergency Management and Resiliency: Representative Paul Evans, Oregon State Legislature leans on a 30-plus-year career spanning military, National Guard, firefighting and emergency services to share insights into emergency preparedness and resiliency for the transportation sector.
  • Associate Member Updates: Practice your two-minute elevator pitch! An open forum for APP’s Associate Members to introduce themselves and explain their products and services that are invaluable to the port community.

Ports & Issues:

  • One Waterway, Two Legal Systems: American Maritime Lawyer Alan Goldstein and Canadian Maritime Lawyer Peter Swanson discuss where Canada and the U.S. agree, disagree, cooperate and conflict on major maritime issues.
  • Looking to the Future: Vessel Traffic and Port Infrastructure Needs: Clear Seas looks at increased vessel traffic numbers and talks about investment options that could apply to the ports in the Pacific region for proposed projects. Clear Seas is a Canadian not-for-profit organization that provides independent fact-based information to enable governments, industry, and the public to make informed decisions on marine shipping issues.
  • Governance, Executive Recruitment, and Retention: Shey-Harding Executive Search’s Managing Partner Susan Dvonch is joined by Katie Miller, Deputy Port Director, Administration, Port of Stockton, to enlighten attendees on the keys to building an effective team. Both speakers are renown for their successful recruitment strategies.
  • The Elephant in the Room -- Ship Dismantling and Recycling: Alex Rueben, Executive Director for the Association of British Columbia Marine Industries (ABCMI) and Catherine Hofmann, Principal, Catherine Hofmann Law, highlight the issues and implications of regulations covering ship recycling and the resulting implications for ports.

The Don Young Port of Alaska prepares for a historic overhaul to cargo terminal

Report from KTUU News (By Joe Allgood) April 25, 2025 — After over 60 years of existence, the Don Young Port of Alaska is already in the process of the largest change since its inception. As part of the Port of Alaska Modernization Program, a contract for over $800 million in work was awarded by the municipality of Anchorage for a new terminal, meaning designs over a decade in the making will begin to take shape. “This is probably the biggest infrastructure project that the state of Alaska has ever seen since maybe the Trans-Alaska pipeline,” said Port Director Steve Ribuffo. “It is that size in significance not only because of the cost, because of the magnitude of change in one place that’s going to happen over a decade.

Steady progress on Port of Taichung Land Reclamation and Seawall Construction Project lends critical support to offshore wind power sector

April 24, 2025 — Port of Taichung is pushing forward with plans under the Port of Taichung Land Reclamation and Seawall Construction Project to meet future growth and national energy policy needs, provide critical support to the nation’s expanding offshore wind power sector, and offer a productive outlet for soils regularly dredged from port waters and navigational channels. Land reclamation work is proceeding in closed off sections of port waters using soil regularly dredged to maintain navigation and operational safety. Once completed and stabilized, current plans call for the reclaimed land to be developed by offshore wind farm interests in a manner that further deepens their roots at the port and builds Port of Taichung into a critical hub for the offshore wind power industry.

Vector Corrosion: A better way to build: Sustainability through preservation

April 23, 2025 — It’s no secret that the concrete industry significantly impacts our world and society. Concrete is the second most consumed substance on Earth and the most widely used construction material by far. Each year, we produce more than 30 billion tons of it to meet the demands of growing populations, urban development, and aging infrastructure. That level of use comes with enormous environmental and operational implications. If concrete were a country, it would be the third-largest emitter of CO₂, following behind China and the U.S.

SEEN Safety: A shift toward proactive safety

April 22, 2025 — SEEN Safety CEO Dave Knight provides observations from recent travels…

On recent visits to the US and the UK, we saw a clear shift. Health and safety professionals are no longer waiting for a near miss or serious incident to justify investment. They are now looking for ways to prevent incidents before they happen — and that means turning to active safety systems that detect people in real time. Some common challenges we heard were:

Passive Safety Is No Longer Enough

For a long time, safety around forklifts and heavy equipment has depended on passive controls like barriers, bollards, walkways and high visibility vests. These are important, but they are now the bare minimum. The more progressive safety leaders are starting to ask a new question, “How do we stay ahead of accidents, not just respond after they happen?”
