Keynote Presentation: Today's Modern Terminal


DP World's Maksim Mihic, Global Executive Vice President, Operations and Engineering, explores the advancement of operational standards in today’s modern terminal. From decarbonization to digitalization and the impact of AI, Mihic highlights the efficiencies and sustainable practices that can be achieved to create some of the world’s most advanced terminals.


About Maksim Mihic-- Based in Dubai, U.A.E., Maksim has functional responsibility for operations and engineering performance across the DP World Ports and Terminals portfolio. He currently serves on the DP World subsidiary Boards of World Crane Services, Antwerp World Gateway and Rotterdam World Gateway. Maksim brings with him over 25 years of marine terminal experience specializing in operations, process improvements, equipment design and acquisition, and project management.

Moderated by Jamie Marshall, National Sector Lead – Ports and Marine, Colliers Project Leaders, two of the leading marine-policy advocacy organizations on the West Coast of North America join together to highlight commonalities, differences, issues and opportunities for the interface between port, marine terminals and shippers.

About Jamie Marshall -- Jamie is a seasoned executive in the maritime industry, possessing over 40 years of combined experience in the naval and ferry and port industries. He brings with him a wealth of knowledge regarding the implementation of project management principles to maritime assignments. He has a proven track record of leading marine-related projects. His decades of work in maritime organizations have granted him a nuanced understanding of the marine industry, along with aiding in his capabilities as a specialist in ports.


About Bonnie Gee -- Bonnie was appointed President in March 2023 after serving as the Vice President of the Chamber of Shipping since 2008. Her experience and strengths are multi-faceted and include membership engagement, government relations, communications and marketing, and project management. She currently sits on several external national and regional Boards and committees and holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of British Columbia, with a major in Transportation and Logistics.


About Mike Jacob -- Mike Jacob currently serves as President of the Pacific Merchant Shipping Association (PMSA), assuming the role in April 2024. PMSA is the premiere, not-for-profit maritime trade association representing vessel and marine terminal interests in legislative, policy, and regulatory matters on the US West Coast, with offices in Oakland, Long Beach, and Seattle. Mike joined PMSA in 2005. Before being selected as President, he served as Vice President, General Counsel, and Corporate Secretary of PMSA. In this role he would regularly testify and appear on behalf of the maritime industry at administrative, legal, and legislative hearings and served as the association’s liaison with outside counsel and advocates.  

Electrification and Shore Power for the Ferry Industry



Mike Corrigan, CEO of Interferry and Vice-Chairman for the Port of Vancouver, describes the trends and new technologies related to electrification and onshore power development as well as other sustainability practices — all playing a role in ports’ efforts to reach zero emissions.


About Mike Corrigan -- Mike’s focus leading Interferry is to ensure that it continues to be the voice of the worldwide ferry industry in matters of safety and operational best practices, is the industry’s voice with regulatory agencies such as IMO, and that the trade association’s value continues to grow for existing and new members. Mike brings extensive executive experience in the ferry industry, most recently as the CEO of BC Ferries, one of the world’s largest ferry operators. 

Oil Spill Response -- Ready Today, Prepared for Tomorrow


As Canada’s West Coast marine response organization for almost 50 years, Western Canada Marine Response Corporation (originally known as Burrard Clean Operations) is internationally renowned for their knowledge and expertise in spill response strategies. Senior Communications Manager Michael Lowry describes the growth of the organization and the plans in place for prevention, preparedness and response to cover both sides of the 49th Parallel.


About Michael Lowry -- Michael is a strategic communications and public relations professional with more than 15 years’ experience in domestic and international settings across the private, public and not-for-profit sectors. He has designed and developed successful communication campaigns for some of BC’s most influential organizations, including Harbour Air, Pacific Blue Cross and Columbia Power. Michael has a BA in Communications from the University of Calgary and a B.Sc. in Politics and International Relations from the London School of Economics.


Emergency Management and Resiliency


Representative Paul Evans, Oregon State Legislature, leans on a 30-plus-year career spanning military, National Guard, firefighting and emergency services to share insights into emergency preparedness and resiliency for the transportation sector.


About Paul Evans -- Paul's experience in emergency management is extensive, starting with the volunteer fire department in Polk County Fire District #1, followed by four years on active duty with the United States Air Force (728th Air Control Squadron), the Oregon Air National Guard, and as a senior volunteer firefighter (again in Polk County). He has also served as senior advisor for Emergency Management, Military, and Veterans’ Affairs, and as Chief of the Protection and National Security Division for High Impact Technology which included oversight of emergency services equipment and infrastructure, product development, marketing, and sales. Since taking office in 2015, Paul's priority issues include education, emergency preparedness, the resilience of small businesses, transportation, veteran services, and workplace fairness. He has a degree in Public Policy and Administration as well as a Master of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies with emphasis in American Government, Environmental Policy, and Rhetoric.

APP welcomes Net Your Problem as newest Associate Member


Prior to creating Net Your Problem (NYP), Nicole Baker was working as a fisheries observer on commercial fishing boats out of some of the biggest fishing ports in Alaska. By chance, she came upon an article that described how Adidas was making sneakers out of recycled fishing nets. “There are literally mountains of nets in the towns where I was stationed,” she said. Another article described how a group in the Netherlands was sending nets to Denmark to be recycled. Connecting the dots, Nicole seized the opportunity to embark on a new career. That was in 2017. Since then, Nicole’s Net Your Problem business has not only grown both in size and geographic reach but has kept hundreds of thousands of pounds of plastic out of landfills and oceans.

Eight Bells: Captain Jeffrey Monroe, MM, CME, AMPE


May 14, 2025 — It is with a heavy heart that we are sharing the news of the passing of Captain Jeffrey Monroe, MM, CME, AMPE, our Director of Education and Training. Jeff passed peacefully on the evening of Tuesday, 13 May 2025 surrounded by his family. Jeff was a passionate educator and a superb mentor, enriching the lives of the professionals that he interacted with. He was accomplished in all his endeavors, which included teaching students at SUNY Maritime College and Massachusetts Maritime, leading ports in Boston and Portland (Maine), serving as an Anglican priest, consulting with ports on their growth and development, teaching port professionals with IAMPE, and as a master mariner.

Port of San Diego and city leaders celebrate ribbon cutting for Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center


May 16, 2025 — With the cut of a ceremonial ribbon, the Gaylord Pacific Resort & Convention Center is officially open for business, relaxation, and leisure. Built in partnership by the Port of San Diego, City of Chula Vista, and RIDA Chula Vista, LLC, this historic occasion marks a new era for Chula Vista’s waterfront. The Port of San Diego, City of Chula Vista and other South Bay leaders and partners celebrated the opening on Thursday, May 15, 2025, along with representatives of Marriott, Gaylord Hotels, and many partners and community supporters.

Port of Long Beach trade supports 2.7 million U.S. jobs


May 12, 2025 — Trade facilitated by the Port of Long Beach is a key pillar of economic vitality in the United States, driving consumer spending, job creation and innovation, according to a new economic impact analysis released on May 12. As one of the busiest seaports in the United States, the Port of Long Beach supports 2.7 million jobs across the nation, including more than 1.1 million in California, the Port-commissioned study conducted by Boston-based EBP US found. In the five-county Southern California region, more than 691,000 jobs are connected to Port trade, construction and tourism, or 1 out of 17 jobs.

Commonwealth Ports Authority announces new Executive Director


May 1, 2025 — The Commonwealth Ports Authority Board of Eirectors has hired former Revenue and Taxation Director Estrellita “Esther” S. Ada as the new Executive Director, CPA Board Chairman Ramon A. Tebuteb announced. In a memorandum to department heads and CPA stakeholders, Tebuteb, on behalf of the Board of Directors, said, “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Ms. Estrellita S. Ada as our new Executive Director, effective April 14, 2025.”


He said Ada “brings a wealth of experience and a strong track record of success.”

He also thanked Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting Chief Fredrick A. Pangelinan, who served as acting executive director, “for holding down the fort for the past five months.”
