This month, we dialogue with Naomi Jay, RN, NP, PhD, FAAN, UCSF Anal Neoplasia Clinic, Research and Education (ANCRE), Mt Zion Hospital. She is recognized internationally as an educator, innovator and thought-leader in the field of high-resolution anoscopy (HRA). She's retiring from UCSF after 31 years of service. MonkeyPox Outbreak
Confirmed cases in the Bay Area and San Francisco
What is Monkeypox and why is it a differential that should be considered?
Monkeypox is completely different virus than the viruses that cause COVID 19 or measles. Monkeypox spreads through direct contact with body fluids or sores or materials that have touched body fluids or sores such as clothing or linens.
Some patients are presenting atypically including with isolated genital and perianal lesions with no prodrome.

Do you know when and how to use a modifier?
Learn how to use Modifiers 24, 25 and 57
Why this is important? In the past UCSF Health has used coders on the back end to add appropriate modifiers. Since 2021, we have transitioned to self-coding and no longer can depend on professional coders. Learn what these modifiers are and when is it appropriate to bill E/M level of service with these modifiers.

APEX upgrades for Ambulatory
|
1.Patient sigs are updated to provide more detail about the medication dose and frequency by repeating the dose amount for each due time.
Previously: Take 2 tabs (650mg total) by mouth 3 times daily.
Updated: Take 2 tabs (650mg total) by mouth in the morning and 2 tabs (650mg) at noon and 2 tabs (650mg) in the evening
2.When CC'd on results you did not order, these lab results will appear in the Results In Basket folder separated from the other results by a CC'd results header
3.Now addend notes directly from Chart Review in the Notes Tab by highlighting a note to edit, then click Edit Note from Notes Tab toolbar
4.Bill for MyChart Messages that require medical decision making and at least 5 minutes of the clinician's time. The compliance note is now automatically populated and includes the date of service
5.All lab results, including micro and pathology results, will be available in the Labs tab of Chart Review
6.To avoid schedule II controlled substance prescription delays, when placing outpatient or discharge medication orders, a window will display which suggests associating a diagnosis with the order
7.There are a growing number of patients that are using MyChart to engage as active participants in their healthcare. To reduce provider burnout and patient MyChart response delays, the recommended strategy is to have a team-based approach by utilizing department level pools to share the In Basket workload and for APPs and physicians to only receive messages/tasks that require their review and action. Due July 1, 2022: Mandatory Adult Inpatient APP Diabetes Mellitus Modules
The UCSF inpatient diabetes team has created a series of inpatient diabetes management mini modules that are in the UC Learning Center. The modules are mandatory for one time completion (not annual) for all adult inpatient and adult hybrid inpatient/outpatient APPs. There are 10 mini modules that take approximately 7-10 minutes each. Every May during Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AA and NHPI) Heritage Month and throughout the year, we celebrate and focus on diversity, inclusion, and leadership to advance the AA and NHPI community. This year, our attention turns to better understanding the diversity of this portfolio. When we categorize AA and NHPIs as a single group, it masks the diversity of languages, cultures, and customs of the many countries and regions that are represented. In fact, this monolithic view of AA and NHPIs also makes it difficult to understand the disparities within the AA and NHPI communities from education level to socioeconomic status.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) Pride Month is currently celebrated each year in the month of June to honor the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan. The Stonewall Uprising was a tipping point for the Gay Liberation Movement in the United States. In the United States the last Sunday in June was initially celebrated as "Gay Pride Day," but the actual day was flexible. In major cities across the nation the "day" soon grew to encompass a month-long series of events. Today, celebrations include pride parades, picnics, parties, workshops, symposia and concerts, and LGBTQ Pride Month events attract millions of participants around the world. Memorials are held during this month for those members of the community who have been lost to hate crimes or HIV/AIDS. The purpose of the commemorative month is to recognize the impact that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals have had on history locally, nationally, and internationally.

UCSF is heading to the annual San Francisco Pride Parade and Celebration! The first 250 people to sign up with our contingent will receive a free T-shirt. Open to all UCSF students, staff, trainees, faculty and friends and family. The exact staging time and location will be shared closer to the date. Don't forget to register here by June 15, 2022.

Mentorship Matters: For All Things that Matter With Mentorship
Welcome to the first column on APP mentorship. This column will be a conglomeration of profiling mentor/mentee partners, education on mentorship and anything else that sounds interesting regarding mentorship.
The most often agreed upon definition of mentorship is partnership between an experienced person and inexperienced person where the experienced person teaches, guides, coaches the inexperienced person in the goals defined by the pair.
Mentorship is the chance to engage with those who have done "it" before you. Or, conversely, it is the opportunity to guide those coming behind you. It is not a requirement. Many professionals, probably most people in healthcare, have found success without the sounding-board of a mentor. But how much better, easier, or faster could they have achieved their goals with the help of a mentor acting as guide?
As you consider approaching a mentorship relationship, reflect on these qualities and how you can develop the characteristics you so admire. If you are interested, Click here for the mentorship application

The BCH APP Leadership Committee invites you to join their monthly virtual peer advice and support event for BCH East and West Bay APPs. The purpose is to provide peer-to-peer support regarding issues related to professional development, problem solving, resources for workplace issues, and opportunity for APP collaboration- especially for APPs working in settings with few or no other APP colleagues.
You can make a 20 minute 1-on-1 appointment with an experienced BCH APP via the bookings page. Note: Meeting will occur via Microsoft Teams platform. You will receive a calendar invite with meeting details after scheduling.
Examples of office hour topics include: advocating for APP appropriate role within a service, talking through quality improvement ideas for your clinic, or navigating UCSF programs and resources for APP professional development. Issues that are not appropriate for peer-to-peer office hours will be directed to the relevant UCSF manager, office, or resource.
