Effective Counter-Terrorism: Rockets, Iron Dome , and the Israeli Housing Market

How effective is counter‐terrorism and what are the underlying mechanisms? Relying on a unique experiment and detailed micro data from Israel, this study shows that the deployment of the Iron Dome anti‐rocket system mitigated the negative effect of rocket attacks on house prices and lowered the price premium associated with in‐house shelters. Analysis of surveys and data on purchases of anti‐anxiety drugs yields evidence consistent with a psychological mechanism: by reducing the negative effects on daily routine, subjective well‐being, and psychological distress, Iron Dome lowered the disamenity associated with living under the shadow of the rocket threat.

Settling an issue that has been highly topical among our professional, institutional and student members over the last year, a federal judge ruled against the Trump administration's addition of a citizenship question to the U.S. Census.

Nikolay Anguelov & Adam Frank recently saw their research on the effects of housing costs on nursing home diversion, originally prepared for APPAM, published in the Journal of Social Service Research.

The U.S. Congress has passed the Foundations for Evidence-based Policymaking Act of 2018. This is comprehensive legislation that has the power to transform government dramatically and lastingly.

APPAM Professional members participated in the American Economics Association's annual meeting last week. There, one of the major subjects of discourse was the sexual harassment, discrimination and bullying faced by many in the profession.

JPAM has issued a special call for papers on crime and criminal justice policy to be edited by John MacDonald, Jennifer Doleac and Shawn Bushway.
